JHS does a Billy Corgan mod or something to make the pedal sound even more like itself.
Anything that makes me sound less like Billy Corgan is okay in my book...
Just get a pedal and play with it, people
Truth.

Favourite Boss pedal is probably the PN-2, but I'd have a hard time not putting the DF-2 right in line behind it...
(but only the version before they had to change the name because the ordering of words on the pedal produces 5Up3ri0r t04nz)

Thought I would mention this as I had overlooked it for years based on the name alone. But how about the MZ-2?Honestly mode one (just distortion) sounds really good. The other modes actually are pretty interesting and if you just drop the drive knob all the way down you get doubling and chorus effects free of dirt. A pretty cool under rated Boss gem. I picked one up a couple of months ago and was blown away at what this little pedal could do.

+1
I had one for years and loved it. At one time, it had a big seat at the pedal table on my almost-all-BOSS pedalboard:

Using it with 2 amps, the slight delay produced this really interesting and lush sound, almost shoegazy.

I still rock an NS-2 and recently got a DD-8, which are both great.

Never forget that Prince had an all BOSS pedalboard. I think that speaks volumes. The guy was one of the greatest of all fucking time.

I'll rep any and all of the following: FZ-2, HM-2 (how has THIS not been mentioned yet in this thread), DD-8, DM-2w. I have no issues with Boss. Outide of the TR-2 which I really didn't like, I've enjoyed a ton of Boss pedals over the years and have never had a board without at least one of theirs on it.

Prince certainly was a legend, and a snappy dresser to boot.
I’m pretty sure he’s running his Tele through some Boss gear here:

My favorite Boss pedal I've played through is probably the Blues Driver, but I think the SD-1 is probably their most underrated pedal. I generally like it better than a tubescreamer.

I also kinda crack up at all the people really into the mods of Boss stuff (or any other brand I guess). As if the stuff just sucks without this super exclusive mod :D

Not only that, his famous Tele was a Hohner. :-*

Yup. I have a heavily modded SD-1, and it's great, but I turned it into another pedal entirely and no longer really counts to my ear as an SD-1, which I'm gonna get another of. Because it's a great pedal.

As for the popularity of modding them, it's fair to say that this is in part because of the through-hole construction and the fact that the housings are really good. And it's also true that they're seldom inadequate pedals as new.
This is an excellent rectangle

The last thought I had on this topic that had me wondering for a second is, how many people mod a pedal because it doesn't sound as pleasing at low volumes outside of a band mix in a bedroom? They mod it then take it in to a band mix and it sucks. Or maybe it is still fine I don't know, but this did cross my mind. And I'm sure that most mods are universal in their application but maybe there are at least a couple of mods that would suffer from this. *trying to justify a passing thought*. :P

That makes me wonder if the engineers at BOSS design their pedals to be either balanced for both situations, or optimized for live band sound (higher volumes, etc.).

I used to be a pretty serious BOSS collector up until about ten years ago when I sold most of my collection. I had about 80 of the 100+ different pedals that had existed up until that time - including two NOS SG-1 with the box (beat that!).

I only have a few left and I only use two of them - a DD-2, which just sounds sooo amazing (37 years old and still works like a charm :-* ) and the mighty DC-2w.

The Waza series is the best thing they could possibly do IMO

You're not the first person to mention the DD-2 in this thread. Does the DD-2 sound that much different from the DD-3 (and further single-sized DD-series)? From all the classic gear I've seen people talk about, it seems like so much of the BOSS stuff from the XX-2 era is just amazing (CE-2, etc.).

The DD-2 and the early DD-3's share the same processor, the so-called 'long chip' (it's as wide as the casing). These are regarded for having an almost analog-like, more organic sound. Honestly, it's just because of the low processing power but I love the sound.

Most Boss pedals are 'XX-2', originating from any decade. I guess maybe you're referring to pedals that have since had 'XX-3', 'XX-5' etc versions? If so, it might be a case of 'the original version was better, before they ruined it with digital/Korea/whatever'
