What was the original color?

Post by coreytree » Fri Jul 24, 2020 1:31 pm

This is the body of a Jazzmaster - I believe is a '73 per the neck plate. Neck is long gone - before I got my hands on this. When I got it in '80, it was a sort of orange Fiesta Red. Looks like the body may have been originally either white or some blue with a white primer coat. Any educated guesses as to what it might have really been?

I can't tell from the picture - maybe try scraping a bit in the corner of one of the routs to see if you can get an idea of the sequence. It looks like the red and blue bled quite a bit when the body was stripped.

It looks like there's blue on the chiselled areas under the pickups, which would make it a refin. Almost every 70s JM is sunburst, so I'd guess that, most likely. I have seen a 70s LPB, mind. They do exist.

I'm going to sound like a broken record but my 73 was LPB. Are you sure it's a 73 body? I was lead to believe they were all ash by then? Unless that is ash with a less pronounced grain.

Thats not a 73 body (from 69/70 onwards there was an extra hole in the neck pocket - which didn't go all the way through, like this 73 jazzmaster body:

Your body looks more 60s.
