Drum Machines!
I scored 3 drum machine just this week.
1st is a Korg KR Mini.
Fun little thing with built in speaker.
I like to jam along with the presets using my Yamaha reface CP.
Hooked it up to a delay and Alesis AirFx to thicken and filter the sound.
2nd, Alesis SR-18
I guess people favour the SR-16 more, but this aint bad.
I like to slow down the presets. There's a whole bunch of reverbs to add that sound good.
It has an instrument plug in so you don't need a mixer or line selector when you want to play guitar, bass ,keys along with it.
The bass and synth lines are cheesey, but you can mute them.
3rd, Korg Super Drums.
Cool 80's unit. Kinda Com Truise sounding.
A real headache to program a recorded beat with this.
I ended up getting frustrated and plugging it in to my Boss looper instead.
Added an ehx oceans 11 for fun, and holy shit did that doctor up the sound.

This may not be a popular opinion, but for me these days, the iPad is where it's at for drum machines. There a number of great drum machines available on that device at all different price points. I've been goofing around with drum machines since the 80s, and honestly, not sure any of of those machines beat what I could do on the iPad, for much cheaper.

It's true. Once properly mixed in a track, you'd never know. But if you took the iPad and my old Oberheim DX and compared them by blasting them through a PA system, The DX would kick its ass. Same thing with a real 808 or 909.burpgun wrote: ↑Wed Aug 19, 2020 5:30 amThis may not be a popular opinion, but for me these days, the iPad is where it's at for drum machines. Re: Drum Machines!
Can't imagine wanting something beyond my MPC Live to use as a drum machine. It probably can't do anything beyond what an ipad can if the ipad is hooked up to a midi controller and a computer or external hard drive, but it's really nice to have pads, knobs, buttons, and a touchscreen all in one package that I can use on the couch or hooked up to my modular system. I can use the modular rack to mess with the drums that I'm playing live, or I can pre-record drums and then use the MPC as a controller to trigger notes or whatever else in the modular wirelessly over bluetooth midi. It can also act as a mixer if I plug guitar or bass into modular and modular into MPC. It's basically a computer that turns into a midi controller if you hook it up to a real computer or midi-capable synth.

TR-606 for life! It’s the only drum machine I’ve never been able to bring myself to sell...

Heard that but not tried....I'll vouch for the Roland TR8S. I have one. One of the best I've heard..internal ACB transistor rhythm sounds are really, really good..Also runs your own samples and the with V2 update it now does FM synthesis.

Interesting, what apps / programs would you reccomend? I have a couple of tablets lying around that could be put to better use.burpgun wrote: ↑Wed Aug 19, 2020 5:30 amThis may not be a popular opinion, but for me these days, the iPad is where it's at for drum machines. Re: Drum Machines!
It's true. For cost and conveniences it can't be beat. Sounds are good (or sample-based, so flexible and up to you) and there are some really inventive interfaces out there that make the experience so rewarding. I would say that Patterning/Patterning 2 is the gold standard unless you're looking for an 808, etc-alike.X-Ray Spex wrote: ↑Tue Sep 29, 2020 2:50 amInteresting, what apps / programs would you recommend? Otherwise -- I recently got a Model:Samples and that's doing me right for the little amount of sample/drum machine need I have.

Re: Drum Machines!
I just got one and I have to say I really like it! I have not experimented with building my own patterns or doing any edits yet, but just the presets alone are fine enough for now. Have you tried to program any patterns on it? wondering how easy/effective it is.burntumber wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2020 7:48 pmI scored 3 drum machine just this week.

It looks like i'm not going to be jamming with any other musicians for a while so i felt the need for a simple drum machine to play along with.

Re: Drum Machines!
I sold my MPC because I could not get the fucker to midi sync with my modular. I've sworn off midi, but I may pickup the MPC One because of the CV outs. The mpc is a better sampler than a drum machine - does anyone know a good drum machine that has control voltage ins an outs?

Re: Drum Machines!
I bought an SR-18 a couple of years ago. What a fu**ing PITA. Far more complex than it needs to be and no set of step-by-step instructions that I have found to make it functional. I recommend that folks avoid it like the plague. Blech.

Re: Drum Machines!
I've got a bunch, a beat up TR-505, Teenage Engineering OP24, Behringer RD-08, Volca Beats, but I'm most excited about the Elektron Rytm Mk. II I just scored on Leboncoin for 900 Euros.
I also hated the MPC 500 I had years ago, but that was mostly because of the menu diving and button drumming. I much prefer X0X style sequencing.
