Fender Twin Reverb suddenly too bright

Post by ncarey13 » Fri Aug 28, 2020 7:39 am

I have a Fender Twin Reverb that I've owned for about 7 years. I can't remember off had how old it is exactly, as I'm the third owner. It's worked perfectly until recently its become very bright. Like almost obnoxiously bright. Even with the treble down low and bass all the way up it's still very bright. Could this be a possible tube issue? Also, it makes this crackling sound while playing for around 5 minutes and then it goes away. This is only when it's first turned on. It's only started doing this just before the issue with the brightness. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bright switch in the "on" position?

I've never replaced anything. I'm not sure if anything was replaced before I got it.

No, it's off. That's the first thing I checked.

How old of a twin are we likely talking here? If this is a vintage one, I'm willing to put money on the electrolytic caps. I had almost the identical symptoms ~15 years ago and it was the caps drying out.

Could be an electrolytic issue... I would have thought other things would have been affected other than just merely becoming too bright.

Is this you plugging directly into the amp with no effects in between? No was in the forward and on position? Tried different cables? Different guitars? Ritual sacrifice? Indian burial grounds? Achy breaky heart?

I think it's around 15-20 years old. Not a vintage one.

I've tried plugging straight in with no effects. I've tried with the bright on and off and the bright works making it even brighter. I've tried different cables as well. Doing some digging around online others have had similar problems but it was a tube issue. When I get back to our practice space this week I'm going to see if that may be the case.

You should Test the Tubes before doing Caps etc... Also, check to make sure there's no loose Connections in the Tubes or Wiring etc..

Start with the simple Stuff...

And of course be aware of where high voltages can hide, even in unpowered amps.

Thanks for all the input. When I get the problem nailed down, I'll report back.
