JHS Pedals 3 Series

Post by blunderbuss » Thu Oct 01, 2020 10:01 pm

I know they can be divisive but wow $99 and they say they’re made Stateside.

I’ve never purchased a JHS Pedal but the show is pretty useful and well produced.

I enjoy the show. Definitely a few of theirs I want to try. At that price point, I'm sure it's probably well worth it.

I wonder what they're based on. The distortion looks like a Rat-clone. The Chorus is probably a CE-2? Any ideas about the others?

They’re all based on Behringers! :D

If by "made" they mean "assembled"...

How long before someone rehouses one, goops the board and charges $249 for it?

The exterior design kind of reminds me of the Malekko stuff, and the approach reminds me of https://www.chicagostompworks.com/

I’ll be curious to find out more about built vs. assembled. That was my gut reaction, too. Especially considering their use of surface mount parts through their current line. Im interested in how they get to a $99 price point.

Not negative or positive, just curious. I take these as their attempt to make a Boss line in house.

On a dark stage, how do you tell them apart?

Okay, for the pre-chorus, step on the White one?

The White one? Which White one?

The one with 3 knobs.

No the one with three knobs and a switch.

Swindler Effects has been doing the all white bare bones look for years.

Of course JHS is really best known for their original ideas.

Oooh, interesting.

Yeah I don't know what to make of JHS really. I was never really moved ether way by the supposed "drama" around the founder and his personal life, nor am I super concerned about what circuits they rip off because I feel like that's what a lot of pedal makers already do. The video content isn't my favorite because I feel like the play samples aren't terribly substantial or really that good sounding.

I think they at least try to make the pedal demos listenable instead of just mindless shredding which I somewhat appreciate. But they do tend to pick like one sound per pedal which doesn't give you the greatest idea of what it's like. I imagine these will sell very well. From the video, the chorus and reverb sounded the best to me - especially at $99. Fuzz and distortion sounded pretty generic to my ear. Then again, as we said the demos aren't always that representative.

I liked the reverb quite a bit and the delay is pretty tempting for the price. I don’t really have a delay I love right now.

can i add sarcasm punctuation? The whole thing of generally ripping off smaller pedal builders?

reverb is cheap at 99, but drives and fuzz of the generic variety are expensive at that price.
