What are y'all's dream amps?

Post by Vendetagainst » Mon Oct 26, 2020 3:53 pm

I'm just curious. My number 2 is definitely a vintage Bassman, and my number 1 is a Gen 1 Sunn Model T. What are the amps y'all dream to own?

I wouldn't mind another 1974x-style amp as my Avatar 18 was quite lovely. The Ceriatone 36w version for just a bit more oomph would be ideal.

I’m happy with what I have currently, but I guess I’d say a Benson Monarch head and 1x12.

If I’m paying I’m not gonna shell out that kind of dough for an amp, but if we’re dreaming sure.

Ooh boy. That's a good question. Personally, if you gave me the option to have a thorough collection of vintage guitars or amps I'd almost certainly go amps. This could partly be down to the fact that I feel that a lot of perfectly good guitars are made nowadays, whereas some amps (and certain speakers) are only available as vintage pieces. I suppose for enough money you could pay someone to recreate either but still.

Anyway,
  • Fender Blonde Showman with the 2x15 JBL cabinets and a 6G15 reverb tank - the original doom rig (change my mind).
  • Bruce Zinky Fender Tonemaster + cabinet - there is some conversation as to if these are actually that good sounding, but I'm a Tim Rogers acolyte so it goes on the list. The Vibro-King would be an acceptable substitute.
  • Hiwatt DR103 and 4x12 Fane-loaded cabinet - Actually, the reissues made under the new management are meant to be pretty good too.
  • Offset JTM45 head and cab - I like early Marshalls, these look sick and had their own speakers in the reissue cabs too.
  • Marshall Major 200 and a 8x12 cab - I'd put this on the roof of my house next to a giant bell and play them during thunderstorms.
  • An early EF86 AC amp of some description.
  • A Dumble - Just because I'm curious, although some of the D-derived Two-Rocks look pretty sweet too.
  • A point-to-point Hot Rod Deluxe - because of a perverse fascination I have with that amp.
  • Dr. Z Z-Wreck - Some of Ken Fischer's last design work in a beautiful piece of kit that absolutely rips. The half-power combo could be an interesting AC15 alternative too.

I'd love to have a go on some Sunns, Sovteks, Matamps, and the like, but I'm not familiar enough with their circuits to put them on the main list. There's also a bunch of boutique combos, as well as echo units and effects and such I could list, but I fear this thread would just become "Gear that I've seen at least once".

Again, great question.

I have gotten two dream amps and there are at least three left. The number one desire is a ‘62 Fender Pro. I want one of those so badly. The other two are a 6g6-B Bassman (ideally a ‘62) and a ‘62 bandmaster. I used to really want a ‘62 Vibrasonic but now I think the Pro would be better. I developed a fetish for 1962 amps after hearing this one:

Since you mention it, this is actually one that I do have! It’s a 1962 6g14-A Showman with a factory-installed Triad OT (part # 45268 the OT they used on the 5f8 Twins a few years earlier) and can handle 4 ohms. The cab is a 215 w/ JBLs. (Tank is a ‘63.) GREAT choice braddah! Now if only my arms would heal and I could play guitar again.

I kind of also want a 6g14 Showman, but that won’t be from ‘62 so I can’t get one haha! I also want a 6G8 Twin but I doubt that will happen.

I wonder if anyone here has a ‘62 Pro?!

I'm pretty sure Brian Setzer is meant to have ALL of those. I heard an interview recently where Deke Dickerson (pretty sure) went to the storage joint where Setzer's gear is kept. Apparently it was chock full of piggyback bassmen and space echoes, to the extent where it kinda seemed like overkill.

No, he doesn't! I have one of them ;D

Back to topic. My dream amp is a Ampeg V4. I used to play in a hardcore band as a teenager and we where allowed to practice in the rehearsal room owned by the uncle of a bandmate and could use his uncle's equipment. There was a V4 with a matching cab I played every practice. What a massive sound! What a beast of an amp!

That said, I'll hardly ever buy a V4 due to the weight and insane volume. But some smaller lower power vintage Ampeg like V2 is very tempting... :?

Already sitting on two-and-a-half: a Harry Joyce DR504 and a 65 Bassman. I have a fantastic OR80 clone (the “half”) but I wouldn’t hate replacing that with a pix-only Orange.

As for wants? A Hex Amps Micro T probably tops the list, as it’s the only amp I’m actively always looking for. I’ve had first- and second-gen Model Ts which were great but insane overkill... that tone in a 7-watt head? Sign me up!

For many years I thought a Bassman 100 would be the perfect amp for me - I was still browsing ads for many moons when I already bought that Dripedge Bandmaster a few years ago. Had the chance of a direct comparison recently - and I must say I just love the trem option of mine! And I couldn't crank the 100W anyhow. So I'm good for now.
I run it into a 2x15 Bassman cab (sadly the JBL speakers already got exchanged before by one of the pre-owners - and I didn't know what to look out for when I got it. Still have a reconed K-130 that I want to try with the Eminence speaker that's in there. It's not the Showman Cab - but I like the format and weight perspective - and even if some criticize it - it still makes a great sound (at least good enough for my Garage/Psych/Surf/Doom needs) and believe it or not it's the amp I play in my living room (rented flat) as it can be dialed in quieter (and still good sounding) than the Vaporizer.

But yeah, speaking of dream amps it probably is still/now this:

Or a Bassman of the same era. Maybe both! :-P But they're so out of my price league!
I got a blonde Supersonic 60 with 3 different matching cabs to compensate that "need" - and I got it about 10 years before I even knew I'd be totally into Showman Amps one day - like precautionary... ;)

It has always been an Orange OR 120 Pics Only but as I can't see a situation where it wouldn't be too loud and I just can't justify to ever spend this insane amount of money for gear, I'm now saving for an OR 50. I also want a purple Vox AC 30 one day, that would be number two.

I think I have my dream amp (I didn't know it until I got it) -- a Dr. Z Jetta. It's not stiff the way most Dr. Zs I have played have been. It's a wonderful pedal platform and is clean for days.

But the amp I've wanted for the longest time (and if I had a back that could shift it) is the Matamp King Street Combo (2x12). I had the pleasure of playing one when we opened for a touring act a number of years ago. The guitarist in that band suggested I try it and I fell in love with it. I ended up using it for that gig and have looked for one ever since.

Failing that, I have always wanted to try a Carlsbro Stingray -- Andy Gill's amp. Just because.
