AV65 Jaguar Replacement Necks

Post by 601210 » Sun Nov 15, 2020 7:09 am

So I've been hunting around for a Jaguar neck for a while and notice that Stratosphere have just posted what they describe as "NEW Fender American 65 Jaguar Replacement NECK USA Rosewood Bound 009-4017-821" on reverb (not gonna post it here in case it accidentally counts as advertising).

It seems like they *are* in fact 65 jaguar necks based on the spec (and not American Original), but they're listing them as new and seem to have a ton in stock so I'm wondering how that's possible.

Did Fender ever sell AV65 Jaguar necks as a standalone replacement part? I can't find any other listing that suggests they did at some point, but I guess it's possible that they stumbled over someone's leftover stock? I have bought stuff from Stratosphere in the past so I'm not completely sketched out, but I do find it a curiosity.

Sidenote, anyone with an AV65 Jaguar have particular things to say about the neck? I heard it's a fairly chunky neck that the Marr Jaguar is based on, I'm also curious if the edges of the binding are fairly square or if they're rounded off at the factory.

Hmmm... that's interesting. I've never seen them sold as a replacement part before. I love my AV65 Jaguar. And yes, the neck is pretty chunky on those, which is kind of odd because I usually prefer slimmer neck profiles, but for some reason it doesn't bother me. Have you thought about emailing the Stratosphere to see where they came? I'd kind of like to know, too.

I sent a message on Reverb. It's extra weird to me cause they state that the pictures are stock photos only and then they go through the pains of adding a picture of a box with a serial code, but I know tons of people have bought from Stratosphere (myself included, zero problems) and found them to be completely reputable.

Btw, is there any roll at all on the fingerboard edges?

I don't know about these ones, but they've had interesting stuff in the past that seemed like some sort of old stock/overstock purchase from the Fender factory.

Like one neck I seem to remember from a few years ago was an AVRI Jaguar neck with ice blue metallic headstock that had no tuner holes drilled. It was literally a brand new neck from a discontinued model and clearly didn't come from a disassembled guitar.

So maybe they just have contacts at Fender and pick up parts like this from discontinued models when they're available?

On the AV65 I’ve played the neck was well chunky. More so than my Marr. Slightly rolled edges also. A wonderful thing.

From memory Stratosphere's business model boils down to them buying guitars and parting them out on a cottage industry scale. That way, they're able to sell items that aren't technically available as a 'part'. I think it's actually kinda difficult, if not impossible for most people to buy a neck on it's own from Fender. This also means that their stock is limited to whatever they're able to get ahold of at any time.

The stratosphere AV65 jag necks are described as "mid 60's C". That is the same as the American Original 60's and Vintera 60's and is indeed on the chunky side by the 12th fret ...
1st fret 0.825" 21.0mm
12th fret 0.975" 24.8mm
"I just knew I wanted to make a sound that was the complete opposite of a Les Paul, and that’s pretty much a Jaguar." Rowland S. Howard.

Interesting. So Stratosphere got back to me and said they got them from a Fender authorized distributor and they're uninstalled, nut unslotted, etc etc.

I'm not in the US and so have never been to a Fender authorized distributor, but they do have the ability to order parts that aren't normally listed for sale, right? So maybe they did get in touch with a distributor that had a bunch of these sitting around?

Wow... I wonder why they had so many left over? Did they say if the mounting holes are already drilled? I'm tempted to buy one just to build another Jag in different color.

Oh, and to answer your question, yes, there is some roll on fingerboard. It's a very comfortable neck. I just wish these had the satin finish. That's what mine has, and I don't think I could go back to gloss.

Stratosphere says they are indeed drilled for mounting holes. Another curiosity is they have two listings for AV65 Jag necks, one with the serial number 009-4017-821 and the code "JAGUAR RW NAT BND B/P" and the other as 009-4017-121 with the code "JAGUAR RW NAT BND PNT". Obviously that's rosewood, natural, bound, but I'm racking my brain cells trying to guess what B/P and PNT mean ???

I would guess B/P is short for BND PNT. Another guess Bound Painted
