One of the delights of seeing Guided By Voices live for the past 20 years has been watching Doug Gillard coax excellent cleans to big dirt tones from his Dual Rectifier half stack. Certainly changed my mind about what those amps are about and what a variety of players can accomplish with one.

Yeah. That kinda shocked me. Honestly if I think of the guitar tone of 00s radio rock (buttrock) I think of a PRS with EMG's running into a tube screamer into a rectifier with the mids scooped, then heavily processed with lots of compression and a very heavy noise gate. The usual result of this was the infamous "static" guitar tone. Which was basically a guitar tone with no note definition and just sounded like static at different pitches. When I heard that's what Doug used, my first response was "so that's what a rec sounds like in the hands of someone who doesn't chug monster energy"

There are always exceptions to every rule. I am sure there are hundreds of really great guys and gals that play PRS guitars and write cool songs with sparkly tones and parts. When I see/hear one of these people I will be happy and excited as it's always nice to hear cool songs and sparkly tones no matter what. Until then I'm going to make an educated guess that the music is going to SUCK.

Mesas are the PRS of Amps. I know they can do good things, but most of the time they don't.

Also, Jeff Buckley, REM, Radiohead use/used Mesas ,not just for chuggers.

I got into Mesas 5 or 6 years ago when I was downsizing and wanted a jack of all trades. I bought a 5:50 because it was relatively cheap and had 4 modes. Fell in love with the flexibility. The 5 watt mode is my practice amp at home, and if I ever need more headroom than my Princeton or AC15 it fills the slot.

If I ever need the volume again a Tremoverb or Blue Angel are in my future. If I ever decide to go down to one amp, the Lonestar is in the running.

I owned a mesa trem-o-verb. was in a space rock band with huge clean sounds, pedal heavy synth type pads, reverbs, and smooth gain. that amp did it all very well.

My dream amp might be a Soursound with inductor based active midrange circuit (kinda like ampeg v4). But I'll never get to play one. Otherwise: blonde fender showman and some flavor of ampeg V series amp again. that ampeg active midrange control is pure magic. makes the amp obscenely versatile.

my needs are simple: big surf guitar headroom, 6g15 style reverb, center frequency selectable cut or boost midrange control. i'm not a fan of mid-scooped sounds.

I have been GASsing for a Vibrolux Reverb for years.
They're always hard to find, or the price is crazy.
I love the clean tone on them, and they sound particularly good with Jazzmasters and Jaguars.

vibrolux is so good. I've got a chassis to build a brownface vibrolux after the new year.

This has changed so much over time. I used to want a Matamp, then a Fender Quad Reverb for a while (these sound amazing live, they're so stinking loud). Now I just want something that sounds good at low volume. I'm not sure it's physically possible.

Bandmate plays a Mustang through a silverface one. Great sounding combination.

Yea, they sound great with all the Offsets. They give them a big tone. Especially the version with the 15" speaker.

With Vibroluxes being a 2X10, does this mean they've been replaces with one 15in speaker.
