NBD - Sherwood Green Player Mustang Bass

Post by Bradley-Jazz » Thu Nov 19, 2020 1:45 pm

Hi everyone,

I've recently received my limited edition Player Mustang Bass PJ in Sherwood Green....

Image

Apologies to all real bass players - I'm the archetypal guitarist who just wants to dabble in bass a bit, though I am trying to learn to play this properly. Playing with a pick is easy, and sounds good, but I am working really hard at getting good two-fingered fingerstyle technique. I've a way to go...

I used to own a Squier Precision, and never really got on with it - the stretches always felt too big. I'm tall with normal sized hands, so I could reach, I just didn't feel comfortable - I think it was just the difference between my guitars and the bass. The Mustang is immediately more comfortable, and light (7.5 lbs), and I'm really happy with it.

Obviously though, I've already felt the need to make a couple of modifications: Dunlop strap locks, D'Addario Chromes flat wound strings, and a blend pot instead of the three way switch.

Image

I researched the blend pot over at TalkBass.com. It is a 250K M/N pot wired (and I hope my terminology is correct here) as a pair of variable resistors, not a pot - the ends of the pot tracks are not grounded, so it doesn't lose any more treble from the signal on top of the existing vol and tone pots. So, from 0 resistance in the centre, it raises the resistance on one pickup's signal (depending which way you turn it) to fade it out. I've modified the pot by cutting the tracks at the end of the pan so at each end of the turn it acts like a switch and completely disconnects the pickup, rather than leaving it in circuit but quiet. I find it a genuinely useful mod - P pickup with a hint of J pickup is a really nice sound and distinct from the 50-50 combination, for example.

Sounds good, feels good, and it's a cool colour!

Looks great, and I dig that blend pot.

that's an outstanding report! great mods, and indeed a fabulous colo(u)r. i am envious! 8)

i'm in the very same space: a guitarist who wants to finally get a good bass and try to expand my skills, my sole bass experience being with a Fender Precision that i found oversized, cumbersome and unwieldy. not to mention ugly. so i've had one of these lovely Sherwood Mustangs in my Reverb cart for the past couple of weeks, on the theory that a short scale would make a good gateway into the form...

... but now my cousin has me leaning toward one of the new Jag basses, saying i'd pick up the full scale pretty quickly if i tried. now i'm trying to decide whether getting the short scale would be super great and comfortable out of the box, but ultimately self-limiting.... i think subconsciously i just want both :fp:

I hate P/J setups, but the Sherwood hides the bridge pickup well. :)

Looks really great!

Sure hope they don't release a Sherwood Player JM or Jag anytime soon - no more space in my music room LOL ;D

That's a seriously great bass! And the blend knob is an incredible mod!

I hear a lot of people dissing the P/J setup. Any insights into why? My (dearly beloved) Mustang Bass is one of the Japanese ones, and I feel I am missing out on the extra pickup. Am I?

That is beautiful. Exhibit #384928 in the case of "Sherwood Green makes everything better".

I'm much the same as a guitarist who dabbles in bass... You've given me GAS now.

I've got one of those. Highly recommend putting a white pearloid guard on it. It made my Mustang look truly amazing.

You're not missing out. The J pickup doesn't sound too great on this bass, it would have been fine with a single P.

Lovely bass dude. And I love the colour. I'm kind of the same in that I'm a guitarist that dabbles with bass. I also find the longer scale of the standard bass guitar too much. I currently have a Squier VM Bass VI in my arsenal which does cover my bass needs but it would be nice to have something like this as well.

Another guitarist-dabbling-in-the-low-tones here!

I just acquired a bass- ended up going with a full-scale longboat Surfcaster Bass, but quite honestly it was picking up one of these Mustang Basses at a local shop that gave me the itch.

This green one is the pinnacle of the form- and the blend pot sounds like a great mod. All-around WIN!
