Testing the layout. The big question is where to run the ground wire--most likely to the string anchor at the end of the body. I need to remember to drill a channel from the pickup cavity (yet to be routed) before I glue in the neck.

Did a little work in the shop this weekend!

Image
I made a shoe rack for the family using some b-grade pine that will get stained. It's got 8 shelves of various heights for different shoe sizes (bigger at the bottom for boots, thinner shelves near the top), and a small 3-cubby shelf at the very top so each of us have a spot for our mail.

Image

The big thing was that I finally made some electrical boxes so I wouldn't have to move a single 3-outlet extension cord around. All 3 boxes are wired with 14ga extension cord wire, with the cords secured with coax nail-in plastic support staples. The first two shown are run back to the single outlet in the garage, and the third picture is run to the box in the first picture. The first two boxes being extension cords just get unplugged when I'm not using them, and as such, I won't have to worry about any issues modifying a place that we are renting. Just big extension cords that I no longer have to trip on, with enough outlets to leave my big and most commonly used tools plugged in all the time. SO much nicer.

For a few weeks, I've been working on router bit, Forstner bit, and drill press accessory storage shelves. I took some 5/4 x 6"s (about 1-1/8" thick, so between a 1x and a 2x), cut to 14" long, and then drilled holes for all the bits and accessories. I will be making a 6" depth cabinet for them, where they will all be mounted at an angle and offset from each other (similar to what I'm testing out in the second picture), to save space. The middle shelf is my drill press accessories (chuck key, sanding drums with three different grits in two different sizes, hole saw arbors, and step bits) was formerly mounted on its own, which was fine, but would be a pain to mount all the things I want separately. Here was what it was before:

That's a good looking shoe rack. Obviously it goes near the door if there are mail slots in it.

You never can have too many four outlet boxes around a work space. I did the same thing recently. It does help. Not only can you leave your most used stuff plugged in but when you need a portable hand tool, you just plug it into the nearest box.

Wat are those blue liners you have your router bits in? They look like the fit a couple sizes. Nice.

Thanks man! Yep, the shoe rack goes by the back door into the garage, as that's where we come and go most often. My daughter usually use the front door most often, so I might make her a little one for her own shoes at the front door, which could double as a rack for guests too.

Seriously. You can never have too many outlets in the garage. I've been standing things with my random orbital sander standing up by the outlets, instead of on a table because of that. I might make another box to mount to the bottom of my assembly table, but I haven't decided yet.

Rockler Router Bit Storage Inserts
I find that Rockler is usually pretty expensive, and I can frequently make something as good for cheaper, but these were perfect. $6 for a pack of 10 plastic inserts that hold BOTH 1/4" and 1/2" shank router bits. The only thing is that they come out of the wood hole a bit easy, so I need to see if I can use a little CA glue to secure the inserts to the wood. Otherwise, these are awesome.

I still have some more routing to do to get all the shit to fit in the cavity.

It's like, how much more Wide Range could this be? And the answer is none. None more Wide Range.

Thanks for the link. I've bookmarked that. Those look great! The price isn't bad, either. It looks like you would have spent $24 for enough to do all those holes and have a couple spares left over. Maybe use JB Weld (JB Quick) to hold them in? A little bit on each one would be a good way to hold them in. Forever.

Yep! I bought 4 packs of them and have a few left over. I've never really messed with JB weld in any form. I'm glad that's an alternative as I've always heard that CA glue can sometimes melt and fuck up plastic/rubber.

If you don't need a structural bond, the JB Quick (5-minute version) is great stuff. It sticks to almost anything. I use it for many things. Here I used it to modify a pattern I cut wrong. Note the grey of the JB Weld I used to bond in the modifications.

Oops, it looks like I've given away a peek into my next project. :D

I just strung a Mandolin, and am going to get this Jazzmaster build back on the bench to get the tremolo set up. Thinking I should put graph-tech saddles in – my Jaguar and mustang both enjoy them.

Ok. That’s just a bit too cool. 8)

Must know what switches do and how those pickups work/what they are!

Thanks
