Jazzmaster neck and bridge pu's... the same?
someone's parting out a '66 JM on ebay and I'm watching the pickups.. I want to replace the AVRI bridge pu in my '66 and asked which of the two auctions was for the bridge pu and was told they're both the same. Is this really true? I always assumed they were a bit different

yeah, the neck pickup should be RWRP. maybe the seller is unaware of this and just assumed they were the same

I'd think that the neck pup would be hotter than the bridge pup....which is normal on guitars....
can he give you readings of the pups?

yeah it doesn't sound right.. I've never heard of them being the same before, it'd be nice to know which is which. I assume they came out with the same reading since he says they're the same but I'll ask him

Would the length of the ground wire be any indication at all? I would assume the longer wire is for the bridge pu, but I might be wrong.

They are the same pickups, but they need to be setup differently to create the different sounds, it's the same with all guitars with two of the same pickup , like all Gobsons's :-\. The bridge pickup is lower down to give a mellower sound.

isn´t it normally the other way around?zhivago wrote: I'd think that the neck pup would be hotter than the bridge pup....which is normal on guitars....

anyway, i´ve always been under the impression that vintage jazzmaster pickups were wound to the exact same output, but with the neck RWRP.

OK, dumb question:mynameisjonas wrote:anyway, i´ve always been under the impression that vintage jazzmaster pickups were wound to the exact same output, but with the neck RWRP.zhivago wrote: I'd think that the neck pup would be hotter than the bridge pup....which is normal on guitars....
I know what RWRP means, but WHY would you need one that way? With singles I assume you could reduce hum, but with HBs would it matter? I'm showing my electronic ignorance here, and any clarification would be appreciated.

Jazzmaster pickups are single-coils.DB wrote: With singles I assume you could reduce hum, but with HBs would it matter?

I htink that was referring to the earlier gibson comment.
Soooo, what im gleaning form this conversation is that if i swapped my old CIJ jazzmaster neck pickup out into the bridge position, it would sound quite the same?

I prefer their older stuff.

Re: Jazzmaster neck and bridge pu's... the same?
so are they the exact same or is one RWRP?
sellers says they're exactly the same, I doubt I'll be able to bid but incase something comes up and I can or I see another non specified '66 pu it'd be nice to know for sure if they're the same or not.
oh and.. how can you tell the difference?

I was, but I also learned the JM pickups are single. I have a Jag and Bass VIs and didn't know. I got my question answered *and* learned something new.aen wrote: I htink that was referring to the earlier gibson comment.

Re: Jazzmaster neck and bridge pu's... the same?
by looking at the coils and see if the wire is wound in the same or opposite direction, i guess. i don´t know how to tell which one is neck and which one is bridge though. we need doug or jim for this one i think...daydreamdelay wrote: oh and.. how can you tell the difference?
the CIJ pickups are identical apart from that the neck is RWRP. if you switched places of them it would sound exactly the same.aen wrote: Soooo, what im gleaning form this conversation is that if i swapped my old CIJ jazzmaster neck pickup out into the bridge position, it would sound quite the same?
