Anyone seen the new Zappa doc yet?
Came out over Thanksgiving weekend.
I've been a fan since a little kid.
Learned and performed lots of these songs as a teenager.
Received a police escort out of a small town once after the locals got uptight when my band performed Broken Hearts are for Assholes.lolol
I love Frank. I miss Frank.
This doc made me cry.
That's my story.

...and I might have a sooper huge musician crush on Ruth Underwood.

I guess I should watch it, I love the Mothers of Invention and some of Frank's solo stuff.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

I was surprised at how much I already knew about FZ.
It might be a for-fan-only picture, tho'.

I love that first band too.
The first stuff I was shown was Joe's Garage...which is awesome.
But when I found Freak Out!...and then HotRats.
I was in like flint.

There's a love story happening in there too, b/w Frank and his wife Gail, and his family.
It would be the perfect film for a couple wherein one likes Frank, and the other equates Frank to say The Three Stooges. Know what I mean?

Re: Anyone seen the new Zappa doc yet?
Me and a friend of mine were digging through his mother's collection and found the, uh, Mothers and the "Absolutely Free" album. I taped it onto cassette just because it looked so horrible and sounded so weird I thought I might get a laugh out of it at some point. I taped a bunch of shit that day. I don't remember what any of it is now except Absolutely Free.
Anyway, a few weeks later I got high and played the tape, and all of a sudden I was noticing that "Duke of Prunes" is actually a very cool song with a great guitar sound and the band is great. And it's also sung beautifully, but they didn't quite want to do that, so they just fucked up the song structure with odd stuff and nonsensical lyrics.
OK, so stuff started kind of becoming clear to me a little bit, so I kept getting high. This was in 1987 or something and you could smoke that shit all day and I did.
And then all of a sudden I heard this motherfucker, and I was just following the guitar lines interweaving with fuck, I still aren't sure, a clarinet? Some kind of woodwind. It opens up with Holst's Jupiter but I didn't know that then. But I still find it thrilling to listen to, I've heard it a million times and I never get tired of it.
I was pretty sold.

Is this going to be one of those docs where at the end you admire the person as much or more, but you like them slightly less because of how much of a dick they could be on occasion? Because that's how I felt after seeing the Neil Young tour doc they did with Crazy Horse, and I've heard FZ could be kind of crusty and cold.

Hard to say...gotta watch Ruth talk about him during the film. She mentions that cold aloofness that happens with next level thinkers. But she also talks about sharing a moment him when he was really sick and in a lot of pain, so I dunno.Singlebladepickup wrote: ↑Tue Dec 08, 2020 5:05 pmIs this going to be one of those docs where at the end you admire the person as much or more, but you like them slightly less because of how much of a dick they could be on occasion? I've always liked Zappa though never had a chance to see him live.
About ten years I took my son to see Zappa plays Zappa on a bill with
Return to Forever, he's a keyboard player and I wanted him to hear Chick Corea
play live but he flipped over Zappa's music and is as big a fan as I am.
Of course he loves Chick Corea also but it was a hoot going into my twelve year olds
room and hear Peaches and Regalia blasting out of his computer.
