Bloodmoon Jazzmaster aka MBV JM (pics added to pg.6)

Incidentally this guitar, like my last one, is being built around the arrival of a child. My first guitar project will go to my girl as it coincided with her birth. This one will go to the boy when tbey get interested in music (if they do). If not, oh well. I’m having fun putting guitars together

That is really cool. What a neat idea!!! I've never really gotten into shoegaze still, even after a few years around here, but I do love the look of the guitar. Excited to see it come together!!

Are you sure that the blue makes a difference? I thought the whole point of CAR was that it was translucent red shot over either a gold or silver metallic base coat (depending on the year). Metallic base coats don't change their colour based on what's underneath (wood, primer, or LPB).

Well, going by the pictures on this one, it's originally an LPB that just got sprayed over with the CAR -- it's already metallic, so what the hell, right? But you get a richer burgundy kinda thing (not like BMM, but proper Burgundy burgundy), that's still metallic red but has that darker bluish tint.

. . . I typed out burgundy so many times it doesn't even look like a word anymore.

Well, going by the pictures on this one, it's originally an LPB that just got sprayed over with the CAR -- it's already metallic, so what the hell, right?

On the pictures in the first post, I see a layer of gold between the blue and the red.

I’m by no means an expert in this kind of thing. But, if you look close at the wear on the back, it reveals that the gold base for the CAR was sprayed over the LPB. You have to look for it but you can also see traces of LPB coming through in the dings. I’ve seen other examples where the paint underneath does affect the final outcome.

I get you. It’s debatable given all the variables that went into the finish. I cannot conclusively say that the LPB had anything to do with the burgundy. Maybe it did, maybe it didn’t. I think the thickness of each paint layer will also play a factor in final outcome. For example, how thick was the gold layer sprayed? With LPB already being metallic, is it possible that the gold was intentionally applied lighter? While Fender had their protocols, there are sometimes variations in finishes. It’s not out of the realm of possibility. In the end, I’m not completely ruling out the possibility of the blue having an affect in final finish. I’m not really banking on it either.

Simply put, I love the look of this guitar. If it had blue underneath, it doesn’t bother me to do the same. MJT said they can replicate it and as a customer I’m putting my trust there. The possibility of LPB coming through in the future will be a pleasant surprise to whoever is playing it in the future. Either way, I’m happy as long as the end result is right.

Neck has taken longer than normal. Shipping has probably never been as crazy as it is now. But, it’s only a few hours away. Should arrive tomorrow.

Guitarmill has shipped the body. Didn’t send a photo. I asked about the weight and he said he thought it was “just a smidge of 3lbs”..if it’s less than 3.5 I’ll be happy so that’s a plus.

Idk man..I was dragged into the shoegaze water slowly. The first offset I ever saw was played by Kurt. Was a huge Nirvana fan in my adolescence. Then, once I got into college I started listening to a lot of 80s themed radio stations and gravitated towards bands like New Order and then The Cure. Ended up really falling in love with the guitar work of The Cure and it inspired me to pick up guitar again. Listening to so much cure music and reading the music forum here eventually lead me to Slowdive. And ever since then I’ve really enjoyed shoegaze. Slowdive is still > than MBV for me. But, they never really had that signature guitar on stage due to their lack luster career early on. While I’m not huge into MBV like many of their diehard fans, this guitar of Kevin’s is just a great look. I’ve always loved red on red, but his is the ultimate epitome of the combo in my opinion. And truthfully, who doesn’t love a little MBV.

Neck arrived today. First impression is that I really love the look of the clay dots on here. Frets feel great, a little bigger than vintage frets imo. It’s really hard to judge a neck without strings that isn’t attached to a body, but I think it’s going to be fun to jive on. Definitely smaller in profile to my 60s AO neck which is a plus.

I like The Cure and some of what I've heard from Slowdive, but don't know much of it. Nirvana was one of my early influences as well, and probably the first offset I'd seen too, though I was more excited about a famous lefty at that point

Lovely looking clay dots



Should I be concerned with the mating of the American neck with the guitar mill body here or is it insignificant? There’s a little bit of discrepancy as you can see below



I really wish GM would have provided me with the exact weight, but I can already tell this body is exceptionally light. The grain looks good overall and with some mild greying towards the upper portions.
