Long time lurker, first time posting. I recently bought my first vintage guitar. It’s a Mustang built from 1965 and 1966 parts. It was refinished in Lake Placid Blue in the 80’s or early 90’s and Duncan Hot P90s were installed. I own a 69RI and a Squier VM. This one is miles away in terms of feel and comfort. I love this neck.
I don’t love the pickups, they’re fine but I’m thinking of trying out some different p90s. If anyone has recommendations I’d love to hear them!

That's gorgeous, and funny how the refinish and pickups make it look so much like the current MIM Mustangs (but with proper vibrato and switches).
If you're into Fendery tones, I'd try a pair of Bootstrap Pickups' P90s. They're $50-$60 a set, handwound in the USA and they offer several different winds. The reason I recommend them is that several of their sets use alnico poles like a Fender pickup, so really they're halfway between a P90 and a Jazzmaster pickup (except their wheat penny set, which are literally telecaster pickups in P90 covers).
They'd sound thicker than a stock vintage Mustang but significantly more Fendery than any true P90, so they'd be my personal choice for a vintage Mustang that happened to have been routed out for P90s like this.

Yeah it is weird that it fits in well with the new models. Especially since the guy I bought it from did the mods in the early 90s. I wasn’t too interested in those new mustangs but I’ve been digging my J Mascis JM a lot. Seeing a vintage mustang that already had been modified was quite appealing so I don’t feel any guilt.
I really appreciate the pickup recommendation, I wasn’t familiar with the ones you mentioned but they sound exactly like what I’m after.

Nice Mustang for sure!
I love the way LPB ages.
