Removing paint over original finish

Post by pawnzito » Mon Jan 11, 2021 12:10 pm

I’ve got a guitar that the previous owner spray painted over the original finish. It doesn’t appear they took any of the finish off, just sprayed over it. The spray paint is coming off and I see clean poly underneath. Im hoping there’s a way to remove the spray paint and restore the original finish. Is sanding the best option? I’ve also heard using a razor ?
I’m assuming I’ll have to redo the finish, but would like to do this with the least amount of effort (definitely do not want to take it to wood and refinish).
Another problem is they sprayed into the neck pocket as well. As setup it actually fits perfect so I’m worried removing anything from the pocket would ruin that. But my pickiness wants this spray paint all gone...I should probably just leave it yeah?

Do you know what he painted it with?

Ive removed a small amount of nitro paint with acetone "nail varnish remover"

Ive also used it before to clean a poly body with no adverse effects..

It’s krylon spray paint and primer.
