The first soft machine album is one of the truly great psych albums. Very cool. Indeed, anything with Robert Wyatt on is utterly credible round these parts, without doubt. After that posh bloke took the band over, not so much.

Re: Uncool music for dorks.
I had to ask myself what it really means to be uncool music for dorks.
My favourite song that I think would qualify is The Gates by Da Vinci's Notebook.
It's a capella, it's musical comedy, and it's about a computer crashing during office work. Probably the dorkiest thing I could listen to.
I love it.

They Might Be Giants are interesting.
Their aesthetic is completely nerdy, dorky, what have you. On purpose and to the max. When they started, that was their schich. They were a hipster nonsense band from Williamsburg. I love them and those first 4 records so damn much. But, then they stayed that way, and their label forced a band on to them. Then they started making kids educational music.
So now, nobody is quite sure if TMBG is sly subversive dork music, or just straight up actual dork music. Either way. I do not care. The Johns (and the Dans) are brilliant.

If it wasn't for disappointment, I wouldn't have any appointments.

Haha, I still listen to TMBG album Flood every once in a while. I was into them around the same time I was into John Williams' film scores.

Flood is the magnum opus for sure. But Lincoln, Self Titled, and Apollo 18 are definitely worth a listen (in that order).

Re: Uncool music for dorks.
Actually, I recall my older cousin and her husband playing TMBG for me while I was visiting one weekend and what caught my ear was Particle Man and Istanbul, which were used in an episode of Tiny Tunes.
This was about 1994, and I'm pretty sure it was that same weekend (or summer), my cousin's husband found out I had seen Army of Darkness and introduced me to the first 2 Evil Dead movies, which I also nerded-out on because I somehow didn't know they existed.

The first was some pretty screwed up horror at the time I reckon. Dang scary.Stratelejazzuar wrote: ↑Tue Jan 26, 2021 10:51 pm...... the first 2 Evil Dead movies, which I also nerded-out on because I somehow didn't know they existed.

Evil Dead 2 is the best movie.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Same. Now that I think of it I heard a lot of stuff the first time through their song parodies.Stratelejazzuar wrote: ↑Tue Jan 26, 2021 10:51 pmActually, I recall my older cousin and her husband playing TMBG for me while I was visiting one weekend and what caught my ear was Particle Man and Istanbul, which were used in an episode of Tiny Tunes.

Fun fact: TMBG recorded the original Daily Show theme song as written by Bob Mould.

Lol, I just found the ESB cassette in my tape stash. No sleeve/insert, but the tape is there!Stratelejazzuar wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 5:28 pmI remember special-ordering the Empire Strikes Back soundtrack on cassette from HMV, and after I picked it up at the mall, I went across the street to my friend's place to play Super Nintendo and he was like WTF at my music. He put it on and he said the only good thing was the 20th Century Fox Fanfare.
I also recall borrowing Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom vinyl from the public library and getting my uncle to record it to tape for me.

Thank you for the link.Singlebladepickup wrote: ↑Tue Jan 26, 2021 10:19 amI agree, and I also find a lot of interesting stuff over at reddit.com/r/vintageobscura/BoringPostcards wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 12:12 pmThis forum is amazing for finding unknown or underground music. I must have discovered at least 200+ projects since 2009, and that's a very conservative estimate.
