There is no hole or trace from a plugged strap button on the lower horn. Former and first owner isn't a lefty.Amon 7.L wrote: โThu Feb 11, 2021 11:46 amA logical explanation to such a little horn & deeper cutaway would be the carving being done to flip the guitar for a left-handed player and allow a better reach to the higher register.SignoftheDragon wrote: โWed Feb 10, 2021 1:37 pmNo- but he reallyreallyreally wanted an SG apparently.
Any trace of a plugged strap button on the lower horn?
I'm gonna follow this project with sheer interest, I love restorations

Re: Butchered '74 Musicmaster
I don't know if you've seen the "UnVOXed Jazzmaster" thread here.
This body reminds me a bit of the above, but far less worse.
Depending on your woodworker's skills, i'd say this body can be saved, should you want to.
I don't think it's in a too bad shape. The oversanding is not a bog problem if you repaint it. The missing horn can be recreated from a nice slab of Alder or whatever the original body was made of.
Also there is another thread here on a rescued Mustang, simelar process as the VOXMaster.
I think the owner of this guitar, recreated a new body from 2 butchered Mustang/MusicMaster bodies.
So, I'd see there is hope for this one!
One thing is for sure, they did crazy stuff in the 70's...

Yes, the Un-Voxing Jazzmaster restoration thread is great!
I will recreate the upper horn and fill the crude routings and holes. Due to the fact that I often play in bridge pickup position, I'll do a Duo Sonic conversion.

Re: Butchered '74 Musicmaster
Made some progress...
Had to remove more material from the upper horn to recreate it and to have a little bit side grain surface to glue in the neck pocket area. Additional dowels will help to give a good glue joint, due to the fact that bonding end grain isn't solid . Cleaned and filled the routing and made some plugs.

YES!!! That's exellent work!!!
I just love it when a plan comes together!
Great wood working skills! Duo Sonic is a perhaps nicer then a MM. It's always nice to have a bridge pu.
I wonder, was that "middle" P-90 pick ups something old? It looked the part (Althouhg not on the MM)

Phenomenal work on the top horn! You've got mad skill, sir!!
I'm with ohm-men on this, Duo Sonic is much nicer than a MM. On the subject, are you going to put a Toronado bridge with tele-barrel saddles or you've got other plans on your table?

What a great job! I think I would have gone for two pickups as well (not that I could do that woodworking!!)
Is that the original blue paint in the cavities? What colour are you going to go for?

Thank you all for the nice comments!
Yes, that blue paint is the original colour and I will keep it. Additional I'll spray a slightly yellowed top coat to turn it somewhat greenish.Bradley-Jazz wrote: โSun Feb 21, 2021 3:41 amWhat a great job! I think I would have gone for two pickups as well (not that I could do that woodworking!!)

The original bridge plate is existing, so I try to get threaded bridge saddles or build them from threaded steel.
Middle pickup was a mid 60's Gibson P90. Sadly the former owner wanted it back.ohm-men wrote: โSun Feb 21, 2021 2:59 amYES!!! That's exellent work!!!

Re: Butchered '74 Musicmaster
ya know. this is going to be an unpopular opinion but might be a good idea to do something like this.
the guitar is never going to be fully stock again so maybe have some fun with it
