My new amp just got delivered

Post by zhivago » Thu Apr 17, 2008 3:15 am

For quite a while I debated getting a Tweed Deluxe clone....something that I can turn up, and get that great distorted raw sound that only a Tweed circuit produces.

I must admit, that being in the front row and watching mr Neil Young play through one, was what tipped me over the edge.

so about three weeks ago, I took a plunge, and ordered a Tweed Deluxe clone from Nik at Ceriatone.

Nik was super-helpful, and modded the circuit for me, so it features 6L6s and a stronger transformer....it also works with UK voltage

The amp was built within three weeks (Nik's very busy at the moment)

It was then shipped with DHL from Ceriatone and got here within a day and a half!  :o

oddly enough, the package also escaped the import tax, so I got a great deal in the end :)

The amp arrived very well packaged, with all the tubes, and also a nice free t-shirt.

The plan basically is to drop this circuit in a Tweed Bassman sized cabinet that features just one Celestion Gold speaker....I like the sound of big box amps, and I think this combo will completely kill.

the only missing part of the puzzle now is the cab...it's being custom made by mr JD Newell at the moment, so I just got to wait for it to arrive and then I can plug in and RAWK!  8)

here's a couple of pics of the amp:

and here are some large pics of the guts:

the amp feels very solid and is cleanly made using good quality parts

I'm very, very happy with it, and I'll most likely buy again from Nik in the future...possibly an 18 Watt Marshall clone or something :)

Heheheh. Dya emember that happened to me with the Vox? Well I got a call from Customs 3 days ago asking for £40. Thank god the guy marked it down a lot cheaper than it actually was.

I'm interested to see how your amp turns out. My mate in Leeds bought a Fender Tweed clone made by the same guy that did my Rat. I've not heard it yet but apparently it sound fantastic. Hope yours does too.

I guess £40 is not too bad...

I think if I get a tax hit, it'll be around that mark as well...I actually budgeted for the tax hit, so I won't explode with rage this time (the vintage pup tax situation made me hit the roof, though! :D)

Wow, Yanni, that looks lovely! I just checked the Ceriatone site...those things are actually affordable! Wow. Somehow in my mind these clones are around the price of reissues. Guess I was wrong.

One thing I don't get.. are you mounting this one in a combo, you say? How should I picture that, given the transformers sticking out on top? Are you mounting it in the bottom of the cab, or am I missing something?

Can't wait to hear it either. Are you going open-back or closed-back?

Ah, that clears up everything. I'm not too familiar with tweed amps, as you may have guessed.

the writing is the right way...that's how Tweed amps were.

the musician was meant to sit behind the amp back in those days.

Amps with an open back often produce great sound from the back - maybe musicians should start sitting behind them again.  ;)
