From '65 to '21 (Chicago)
Hello offsetters,
Checking in from the Chicago suburbs. I'm mostly a PRS player these days, but I really had a hankering for a slightly longer scale for lower tunings - and a more full-blown mod project.
For years I've looked at building a JM-style partscaster because despite its flaws I always dug my uncle's 1965 Jazzmaster that I had custody of for a few years when I was teenager (it's 10 years older than me.)
Looking for cost-effective neck/body pairings and the idea of doing a finish were stressing me out, so I just picked up a new '21 Squier Affinity JM HH from my local small shop (Guitar Works, Evanston Illinois.)
I'll post my full build as I go - I'm keeping pretty much the body, neck, and bridge plate. Mostly it's about upgrades/tweaks, with the most interesting feature being a push-push tone that will switch capacitor values.

Can't wait to see it, that switching in particular sounds very interesting. Sorta like a simplified Varitone on a push-push, yeah?
Welcome.

Welcome- my wife's family is up in Evanston, so we spend a lot of time up there in non Covid times. Looking forward to getting up there soon, actually, and I have been to that guitar store there... that's the one kind of by Dave's Rock Shop?

Thanks! It's right by Dave's (which for others, sells actual rocks.) They're a pretty good repair/setup place, inventory is pretty limited to Fender and various acoustics tho.Larry Mal wrote: ↑Thu May 13, 2021 6:28 amWelcome- my wife's family is up in Evanston, so we spend a lot of time up there in non Covid times. Dave's Rock Shop is fantastic, I wish there was something like that in St. Louis. I already have a bunch of minerals and such from there and would have a lot more if it was closer. Can't quite afford that Cave Bear skeleton, though!
Guitar Works is a nice place also, they have a lot of great acoustics and some fun vintage electrics, at least sometimes.
They also sell Irish penny whistles in case you want to give one to your five and seven year old sons, which I did, and they serenaded me with wonderful music all day yesterday with it.
It brought tears to my eyes, I'll just say that.

That is also my local guitar shop, and my wife is a big fan of Dave and his fancy rocks. I like Chicago Music Exchange, but it's pretty overwhelming, and sometimes I just want some strings.

I know that feeling. I'd like to go down there just to do some test driving but it can be intimidating, esp when it's still a huge deal to be out anywhere.
