Agree with Unicorn, philosophically - i'm glad you were wise enough to realize it might be too good to ring true in the first place.
glad you got your money back and can move on to the next opp.

but i'm also glad you're looking into the weird package/shipment thing.
that's the crucial point of trust, where they commit to taking the money.
there was plenty of time and space for mistakes to be caught before then.

i'm curious to hear any explanation of what was actually 'shipped'.

cheers!

That's actually a fraud technique that an old boss of mine would do. He'd take cash for an item, give it to the customer in person, and then ship an empty box to another state. I guess he was avoiding sales tax. Totally shifty! I say nail the bastard to the wall, as long as it doesn't wear you out.

Looks like Reverb changed their rules on this last month. Previously, seller-initiated order cancellations and refunds were grounds for warning, suspension, or termination of the seller's account, but as of July 1, Reverb will now gives sellers 5 mulligans per month:
Seller-initiated order cancellations and refunds create a poor experience for buyers and can make them less likely to purchase again from Reverb sellers. To help maintain buyer trust, we’re asking that sellers cancel and refund no more than 5 orders in a month.
That said, even if this guy is no longer running afoul of Reverb policy, it's a whole different story if he committed mail fraud -- especially when it involves a mail carrier than can prove it.

Yeah, there's a huge difference between canceling an order and shipping something, that clearly wasn't the guitar, and then canceling an order.

They've definitely done something wrong here, it's just not quite clear exactly what that was yet. Hopefully you can figure out what was actually shipped.

I would lodge whatever complaints are appropriate here and try to move on mentally because none of it is going to get you the guitar. :(

Well I spoke to a Postal Inspector and they said their hands are tied since the seller gave me a full refund, if he hadn't then it would've definitely been considered mail fraud. Also sent a message to the seller to confront him on his BS and of course he's been totally silent. Also, for some reason I'm not able to leave feedback for the transaction yet which is weird

The absolute best thing you can do, for yourself, is take the refund and walk away. Putting it out of your mind and forgetting all about it.

Shit happens. Fate decided that wasn't the guitar for you. Yours will come.
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

Agreed, onwards and upwards. Still waiting for the refund to get back to my bank account from PayPal and then I'll be on the hunt once more!

sorry this happened to you man, this thread infuriated me. Reverb and EBAY suck equally at points. I have had good runs with gbase and reverb at times but I'm over dealers now.
I used to be cool, now I just complain about prices.

Well Reverb was little help, as expected...Apparently feedback can't be left on orders that have been refunded ??? They also said that since Tidewater Vintage is such a large seller and has such good overall feedback that it was likely just a mistake, but they offered me a generous $15 credit to make up for the ordeal lol ::)

They need to somehow implement a payout policy for sellers that use pre-made shipping labels to require proof that the label's address information matches the buyer's address information (and perhaps the weight and size information should match as well) on the website in order for Reverb to trigger the payout process and release the funds into their account.

I'm not surprised the sale was cancelled. The price, especially for a dealer, makes no sense. It sucks, but buyers and sellers back out of deals all the time. It's not a done deal until you have physical possession of the instrument.

I am surprised at the fake tracking number. No excuse for that.

I'm so sorry to hear this turned out so shitty. I had something similar in the early days of reverb. I picked up a Les Paul Standard at a steal price and when it arrived, the first thing I noticed was a scarf joint on the neck. Nope.

At least you got a refund instead of getting hardcore scammed.

I just wanna know why he lowered the price from $10,500 to $7,500 and then finally $5,500 all within the span of a week or so. And I sent him the offer within an hour of it hitting $5500 which he promptly accepted. Figured he must’ve been desperate for some quick cash or something but who knows!

Damn I’m sorry you got straight up scammed like that! Hopefully this will be my first and last time in such a situation
