Agreed. Although it looks fucked, I love that someone somewhere was so committed to playing their guitar they'd do anything to keep it alive. I've seen a lot of similar mods done to guitars that have lived in poor areas of Africa and such where throwing it away would mean they couldn't play anymore so they just adapt and make it work. If it meant the musician could still enjoy and express themselves I say do what the hell you can with whatever you've got.
