Jazzmaster pickguard options

Post by stilwel » Sun May 18, 2008 7:53 pm

I just bought a used CIJ Jazzmaster that is black with white parts.
Trying to decide what color scheme to go with or if I should just not mess with it.

After seeing a few pics on the forum, I'm kinda diggin' the gold on black.

A place that sells Japan Gold guard (in Japan)

tons of great places to get replacement guards just remember usa guards are not the same as cij/mij so you'll have to mod them to fit.

$96 for gold!!!  I didn't realize they were so expensive.

...and tort isn't much cheaper, at that site anyway.

Hmmm.....I got some thinkin' to do.

It's white on black...or whatever the CIJ JM's are stock.

Is it "aged" white?

I actually think the white and black combo looks pretty cool as is. But if you want to change it, I vote tort. Pickguardian.com seems to have some nice looking tort material.

The stock aged does look pretty nice, gold is even cooler, but I think tortoise wins overall. That looks so nice.

i would say mint green just because of the fact that it is not completely white, but i'm sure someone knows this more than i.

i think it looks good as it is, but of course other color schemes would be cool. it mostly depends on mood, i think.

You can get tort way cheaper than from there. Thats just my scource for Japan gold guards. You can get a decent tort for around $40us.

I like the gold on black a lot, but the tortoise-shell has really got my attention as well.

This pic is very inspiring:

I really wish Fender would do a Highway 1 Jazzmaster with the thin nitro finish so it would break-in like in that pic.

I have a H1 strat body mounted up with my '68 MIJ strat neck and I love it.

Good to hear the tort guards can be had for cheaper...thanks for the info!!

Every single one of us here wishes for that. A H1 with an MIJ neck does sound nice. My main JM is just highly upgraded MIJ refined in nitro with duncan pups and a vintage trem. It was my main live guitar to save my vintage guitars from having to play out. With a little finese you can get a MIJ/CIJ to be a great guitar.

I think I'm going with the tort guard.  What color tort is that on Nels Clines JM??

I like this black one on the right:

Are those both considered Red Tort??

Those are vintage tort guards. There is no repro available that comes even close. You can score them on eBay occasionally, but expect to pay through the nose.

(Although sometimes it happens a forum member e-mails you and offers their spare one. Happened to me. Yay for Fuzz_King!).
