They had a few of the new Vintera IIs at Old Town Music here in Portland when I stopped in on Sunday-I messed about with the Jazzmaster and the Broadcaster. Jazzmaster could have done with a setup, but I was impressed that the body contours and neck seemed really accurate to my 61, more so than some of the custom shop ones I have tried at various shops, which all seem a little too chunky. Frets felt like they could use a polish for sure (I think these might have been B stock or something, not sure), the rosewood fretboards did look nice. They had a couple of the strats as well. Was hoping to try the Bass VI, which is the one I am really interested in, but alas.

This looks cool. The competition blue one has the vintage correct (if completely misleading) "competition burgundy" name, but more excitingly it also has the slight burst that some vintage models exhibited. Likewise with the guitar version.

If there's anything crying out for a matching headstock, it's this though.

I wish the mid-late 60s/early CBS era got more love from Fender. It seems like "60s" always means "pre-CBS" and "70s" always means "well into the CBS era", with very little in between. The closest things I can remember in the past few years are the AVII JMs with the (corrected) CBS headstocks, American Original 60s Strats with the transition era logo (still small headstock, though) and the AO Jags and JMs with their bound and dot necks.

I'd love a "late 60s" Stratocaster with non-bullet CBS headstock and the wonderful "synchronized tremolo" decal:


Targeting a 1969-71 Competition Mustang also would have gotten us the matching headstocks.

Maybe a mid-cycle refresh or FSR will come along and give me something to burn money on

Just wait for the Fender Vintera III Series in a couple of years time. Eager to see the leaked models of that series here, about 2 months before the official introduction
