It's really interesting how expensive all this boxes are getting...I guess in a way a similar thing was happening in the 80s, but with racks.

It would require ratchet straps and some serious stabilisers, on the carpet it wanted to topple over backwards just from standing upright.

I'd love a tape echo to sit on top of it all too, and then gig it just once to say I have.

My brain isn’t good enough to use these somewhat complex units - option paralysis fucks me.

I’ve attempted to use similar things in the past. Typically the try-out involves me playing two notes or a chord repeatedly for about 45 minutes, as I flick through all the options. Soon enough my head explodes and I have to walk away, having not played anything remotely melodious or satisfying.

Other people can use these things to make great sounds, and I admire that.

It's funny how many pedals these days are like a multi-effects layout but with just a couple of effects - to me the interface looks like early-2000s Boss GT or similar stuff, it's even got the rotary pot on the left like the GT-6/8 had.





I'm sure it sounds amazing especially in a mix but that's a lot of money when I already have a couple of amps with spring verb on it that sound great and it's one knob on either amp, plus the size of it means it's a hard sell if your pedalboard space is already limited. Strymon is your boutique "yes it's worth the money if you want the best" thing, but live honestly it's probably not something you'll notice compared to a half-decent smaller bud box reverb pedal.

This is me over the last few months testing all the unnecessary pedals i impulse bought

live honestly it's probably not something you'll notice compared to a half-decent smaller bud box reverb pedal.

This is my position too, but I’m not going for realism or high fidelity. It’s an effect.

For recording this kind of money will buy a lot in the plugin world.

I’m in the same boat as you. Give me a few knobs and a few good sounds and I’m content. I don’t have the time for so many options and choices. Props to the people who are able to get great sounds out of them, though!

I'll admit to sending Eventide a comparable amount of money for the H90, but that is more than a reverb pedal. (Tangent: the H90 is pretty darn amazing, even if still with some quirks. One major attraction is that Eventide is continuing to develop it and release new effects, such as a tape modulation "generation loss"-esque effect a couple weeks back).

I'm sure the "Bigger Sky HBO MAX" will have some amazing applications and open up new sonic spaces for people, inspiring creativity and ambient adventures. That's just not something that interests me. Or at least not for $700, as I already have various things that can turn my guitar into fluffy, evolving smears.

It's great that companies are making pedals that are super duper powerful, but that also means that the more basic pedals seem to be getting more expensive as well. There's also some truth that the fancy ones are basically rack effects (pro vs. pro-sumer), so I'd judge them accordingly, as the new super pedals will probably live more on desktops than pedalboards.

Strymon is the iPhone: ok, this I can sort of figure out. But it costs how much???
