shell pink project - matching hs?

Post by fuzzking » Thu Jun 12, 2008 12:27 am

as some might know i got a lightweight korina body from musikraft a while ago - it's currently at the luthier's for
finishing, together with a neck i had laying around, so he can do the setup for me. point is, he told me he just shot
the first coloured layers and i started doubting whether i should also have the heastock lacquered... it's currently
in a light natural nitro finish. i'm normally not too fond of matching headstocks, but somehow i started feeling
that if i go for a color like this, the headstock should be matched for some reason. it's more of a gut feeling than
a rational thing (like: what would be vintage correct?). maybe it's that the natural (fresh wood) coloured headstock
would be far too bright, but i really don't know.

so guys: please help me decide.  :-\

i also have a nice vintage tort guard and some pus and all the electronics, so i'm ready to go once it's finished.
can't wait....

btw: this is the guitar that helped me decide to go shell pink with tort:

it won't be sunburst underneath, though.  :D

[edit:]

this is my '63, one of the few matching headstocks i like... maybe they would go well together?

I'm personally kinda burnt on the matching headstock... Plus I think a match head would be overly feminizing, whereas tort on pink with a maple headstock has a middle-of-the-road-ness that I quite like.

Leave it au natural!  Shell is great but can get a bit much.  I think LPB, SLG, Burgandy Mist are great with the matching.  SOem reason the metallics appeal to me more.

The poll says "select up to 2 options", so I checked both :)

I like non-matching for shell pink/tort on a JM.  On a jag, I like the matching head.

Matching headstock all the way on a shell pink guitar.  I wish my AVRI olympic white JM doesn't have a matching headstock.  I've been thinking about getting it painted.

holy mackerel! I broke the tie! it's now 11 to 10 FOR natural.
especially with the SP thinskins w/ matching headstocks about to come out...you'll stand alone in a field of ladyboys!
damnit I love shell pink.

I voted for natural, because your headstock will probably match your body better than mine.

Natural for me, too. I tend to think there's not enough contrast between the pink and the maple on SP headstocks.

Natural.

Why: If you go with SP and tort that "indicates" a refin as the tort only came with OLY and 3TS, so keep the neck "original". Just MHO.

BTW: SP and tort is a great combo - one of few CC's that works with tort.

Ugh. No offense, sook, but this pic clinches it for me. Look at how tacky that decal looks, all obvious and sticking out like that.  :k
