Fender Jaguar Mute....
just curious...will the AVRI mute fit on an MIJ guitar?
how is the mute installed?
Angela has them on sale for just under $17...thought I might buy one, as I like the way they look

I think you have to route the hole for the spring if memory serves

I'd forgotten about that!
I might install a mute on my Jag, if I do, I'll post a step-by-step with bigger pics and stuff

Re: Fender Jaguar Mute....
I put one on my '94 MIJ Jaguar. It was a little bit of work, but nothing too difficult. After installing it I had to shim the neck alittle to compensate for the increased bridge height, which then made it play even better and added a little sustain too I mainly did it for the aesthetics though

I installed a mute on my MIJ Jaguar too, and it actually works much better than on my 1965 Jaguar.
Pretty easy with all the right parts!

Re: Fender Jaguar Mute....
zhivago,
I've installed mutes on 3 or 4 MIJ Jaguars and two Jazzmasters. The job is much easier if you've got the problem spring and slug, slug especially. Fortunately guitarpartsresource carries the slugs; I've had success using whatever spring fits from the local hardware store. Once you've got the slug and spring, then it's a matter of drilling a hole about 1" deep for the slug. Plan on shimming the neck, and expect to take the strings on and off a few times when you adjust the height.
Good luck,
Mel

Re: Fender Jaguar Mute....
I bought the mute plate, the plunger and the correct foam pad at GPR, then used the stiffest spring that fitted from the hardware store and some small brass screws to hold the mute in place (not vintage correct, but they don't show as they are hidden under the bridge).

Re: Fender Jaguar Mute....
You want a spring about 1" long that fits in the slug. There will probably be only one at the hardware store that works; that was the case at my local ACE. Also, for mounting screws, the smaller the head the better. You want a tapered head, I think I used #4 3/4 inch phillips head. A larger head on the screw interferes with the bridge.
