So lighten up
I'm plenty light...   :)

I just find it ironic that you are the one making the strong/subjective sweeping statements charged with emotion... yet get defensive when someone responds.

I used to hate strats until I played a good one, there really is a reason people pay big bucks for pre CBS gear, Still not me though. My first Fender was a tele it was a great guitar I am so used to the trem on offsets it's really hard for me to live without. Plus if I ever lost my #1 JM I would quit playing. I don't think you can go wrong with a tele or a jag if you get a quality instrument. IMHO
It's not about the gear! It's about you, your hands, your imagination, your feelings.

I suppose I would choose largely on comfort.  But I like both tones equally.  The jaguar bridge tone is similar to a teles.  For me, a telecaster is more comfortable, though.  If i were you, I'd wait and see what presented itself, unless you fell in love with a tele.

Too true. I believe that the 70s Tele Deluxes (and reissues?) have the tummy cut and forearm contours. I know that lots of people buy Tele bodies from Warmoth with those two "Stratty" features.

Nothing looks cooler than a Jaguar, but for my money, nothing sounds better than a Telecaster.  To my ears, stock Jag pickups sound like thinner, brattier Stratocaster pickups, whereas a Telecaster has this "wood and wires" sort of a clang that just can't be beat.

Sonically, I think the Telecaster is one of the most versatile guitars ever made.  Pretty much everything that can be played on a guitar has been played on a Tele at one time or another.  So, if you can only do one of those two, go for a Telecaster.  But life is much, much better with both. (and a Jazzmaster and yes, a good Stratocaster.)

true about the tummy cut, but unfortunately not the forearm.  my experience with forearm burn actually comes from playing a '74 tele deluxe for several years.

Um...what's a "neck pickup"?

I've played Strats, Teles, Jags and Jazzmasters of all vintages.  I'm not fond of the Strat bridge pickups at all, but I do agree that Jags tend to be more Strat like than like a Jazzmaster.  All things considered, the only guitar I'm comfortable using in all applications is a Tele.  I've used them for super saturated high volume Smashing Pumpkins-type stuff, to cock-rock, power pop and super clean stuff and Teles handle them all very well (for the high gain/high volume stuff ANY single coil will squeal like Ned Beatty in Deliverance unless you reduce vibration).

Another single coil suggestion (my current fave) is a P90.  I know, I'm a heretic!

Jazzmasters are far more comfortable to play for long sets, but I find that they aren't as versatile as Teles are for gigging.  I avoid the forearm burn by wearing long sleeves, sweat bands, whatever it takes but it does present a problem sometimes.

Hehe.

As for the Tele vs Jag issue, it's a tough one. Once you start talking about replacing pickups, Teles are capable of a rather broad range of sounds. They're generally less cool and less comfortable, but you can pick up nice USA Teles generally cheaper than Jags. It really comes down to what you want to play. For a brighter, more in your face sound, a Tele would probably be the go.

One of my favourite bands, SIANSpheric, use Strats quite a lot, as do some of my fav guiatrists and get some of the most wonderful guitar noises I've heard - they certainly don't use them in the way most would associate with a Strat. I find them a bit boring myself, but they can be wonderfully expressive and I wish I could afford to have one nice Strat.

I like strats and I like playing them too, but I don't like their trems. I need either a bigsby or a jazzmaster trem on my guitar to be happy.

One of my favorite guitar players uses a strat. Yoda from Mono. He gets some really nice sounds out of his.

I like any guitar as long as it has a neck pickup.
