62 Jazzmaster Project (DONE!!!!)

Post by nonemoreblack » Thu Feb 12, 2009 6:55 pm

So after deciding that I could definitely use a Jazzmaster in my life I started to scour Ebay for a nice project and ended up pulling the trigger on a loaded 62 body off of Ebay last week.  The plan right now is to finish it black with a non-matching headstock, or maybe even olympic white.  I still have to find a neck but I'll probably just end up going the aftermarket route unless I can find something vintage for a good price (not too optimistic about that one though).

This package was waiting for me at the post office when I got home from work tonight, along with a bill from customs.
Image

It's pretty much all there except for screws, shielding tubs, strap buttons, and the bridge is aftermarket.
Image

The pickup cavities have been routed and somewhat repaired.  Not the prettiest job but It'll do, nobody sees under there anyway  :)
Image

The wiring could use a little bit of work
Image

The pickguard has shrunk and warped a little bit, but has an awesome colour especially compared to the faded guard on my 63 jag (doesn't really show up as nice in this pic though).
Image

I've never finished a guitar before so it should be interesting.  I know that nitro is pretty hard to get here in Canada so I might end up using acyrlic and see how that works out.

Stay tuned.........

Great project!

If you go the aftermarket path with the neck - I think this one deserves a Musikraft neck made after vintage specs - even a slab board - wich would be correct for a 62.

:)
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

screw that guard to a sheet of plywood ASAP to keep it from shrinking further.

Really, wow I never knew that they shrunk that quickly.  Thanks for the advice.

Yeah, it's definitely been refin'd a few times.  I can find traces of the original sunburst, black, white, some kind of really light blue, and the ugliest neon pink/purple/red you've ever seen.  Musta been the 80's  :D

Not sure, but doesn't Re-Ranch ship to Canada? I know it's forbidden to send spray paint by air, but I'm sure it can be send by ground?
Would be nice to heve it refinned in nitro I think. Just an idea though ;)

Looks like a nice project. and +1 on the musickraft neck to vintage specs....

Reranch doesn't do Canada. You either need a friend across the border, or a US shipping address somehow.

Not sure about Black, but I do know that you can get Mohawk nitro clear up here. It's distributed by Richelieu Hardware, the problem is sourcing aretailer who can order it...

Yeah, the only way to get re-ranch in Canada is to bring it across the border yourself so I'm just going to use acrylic for this.  I just ordered a musikraft neck tonight so my plan now is to paint it white with a matching headstock.  I've read good things about duplicolor over on the re-ranch forum so i'll likely go with wimbledon white since it has an aged look to it and should look as good on a guitar as it does on this mustang.  :)

Update.  There's finally been some warm weather around here so i've been able to get a good start on this project.  First step was cleaning out the neck pocket which was a thick mess of paint from lord knows how many old finishes.
Image

I wasn't too worried about getting all of the paint off, really just wanted to get it sanded smooth.
Image

The body's in pretty good shape with only a few dents and scratches which I wont fill since i'm not really going for a 'brand new' look anyway, and this way the body will still match the rest of the parts.  I did as little sanding as possible since apparently past owners were pretty heavy-handed when it comes to sandpaper.  These are both 62's
Image

Sanded:
Image

I taped up all of the cavities since they still show the original sunburst finish.  I kinda like the idea of preserving a little bit of the guitar's history eventhough it's hidden away.
Image

Dilemma!  I had pretty much decided on white but when I did a couple of last minute mock-ups on my kitchen floor and was tempted by black and sunburst:
Image  Image

I waited a day and decided to stick with white, I already have black and sunburst covered so might as well go with something new.

Time for primer.  I used BIN primer which shot out of the can like a freakin' firehose leaving runs everywhere, talk about a pain in the ass.  Not a big problem though, I actually kind of enjoy sanding things so I had it smoothed out in no time.
Image

A quick mock-up, and don't worry, the chunks on the body are just sanding dust that I hadn't cleaned off yet  :)
Image

Time for colour.  I went with Dupli-Color wimbledon white which has a really cool aged olympic white look to it and is actually a near perfect match to the pickup covers:
Image

Improvised 'spray booth':
Image

Ran into a few problems and ended up with a couple of runs and some orange peel.  It seemed that no matter what I did I was either spraying too dry or too wet, I could never find that happy medium.  I've painted trucks with a spray gun before and never had a problem getting a smooth finish, I guess I just kinda assumed that rattle cans would be as easy to use.  In hindsight maybe I should of practiced on a scrap piece of wood first.  Lesson for today, never assume things. :D

The 'damage':
Image
Image
Image

Shouldn't be a problem to fix though, I sprayed thick enough that I'll be able to sand down the runs and get rid of the orange peel no problem.  To get rid of the runs I figured the easiest way would be to tape around them so i can dry sand with a rougher (300ish) grit paper without touching the surrounding areas.
Image

Hopefully I can get onto wetsanding this weekend.  Stay tuned.....
