Bass Cut Switch

Post by Infliktor » Wed Feb 21, 2007 12:57 pm

May be a stupid question but what does the bass cut switch do on a Jag?  Does it interactwith any of the other controls?

WHAT?  ???

To answer the question, it's a strangle switch, it just runs the signal through an extra cap and results in a thinner sound. It's only active with the lower controls, ie. the main circuit.

No, he's talking about the bass cut switch, which is probably why he asked

Is the Bass-Cut not active with the rhythm circuit aswell? I use it a lot of the time because on the bridge pickup I tend to roll the tone control down and use the Bass-Cut to remove any muddiness encountered.

from my reading of the circuit diagramme for the Jaguar, plus my playing with them, the bass cut/strangle switch does not work on the upper "rhythm" circuit  (which is only connected to the neck PUP).
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

I just noticed on the schematic that the rhythm circuit has the same cap as the lead circuit. I had always assumed that it was a different cap and worked the same as a jazzmaster, just with the added strangle switch.

So how does that work then .. it's the same as the lead circuit with the tone rolled all the way off?

so is it the values of the tone pots (50k vs 1M) that makes the difference between lead and rhythm, since the caps are the same?

I always find it so very amusing to see others are as confused as me about the JAG layout.
I figure it out once in a while but forget it immediately. Anyway, I just use the neck PU, as
I find it's the only usable sound in that guitar, anyway.  :)

That's correct.
Another weird thing about the jag is there's also a resistor across the tone knob in the lead circuit that changes the curve of the pot, and makes it smoother.

Strangle only works on the lead circuit.
With the rhythm circuit on (up) the lead circuit is dead.Pots too.
The rhythm circuit sounds different because the tone is 50k with .01cap as to the lead circuit neck pup is 1meg and .01cap.and 56k resistor.
With lead circuit on,the rhythm circuit is dead.

And besides, there is no such thing as a "bridge circuit".  When the upper switch is in the down position, that is the main circuit, the three lower switches and the main pots are active. You can't call this a "bridge circuit" because both pickups are capable of being selected.

I realize 99.5% of the forumites know this. I'm posting only for the benefit of the .5% who don't.

There's nothing wrong with not knowing stuff... but it IS wrong to act like you do and misinform others.

Here's a cool interactive tool that displays all the capabilities of a Jag... what works with what:

http://www.webrocker.de/jaguar/v2/index ... active_jag

Look on the right side of the window and find "click to enter". Once loaded, you can click each switch and rotate the knobs, and see what they do. You can also change the colors of the Jag. Pretty cool.
