Re: Roland JC120 Jazz Chorus - opinions?
1. the jc 120 is a studio staple of mine. there are certain tones (such as the aforementioned 80's chorused out clean tones ala early cure records) that are most easily accomplished with one of those. definitely in my all time top 10 fave amps, maybe even top 5. that being said, i wouldn't want it to be the only amp i owned.
2. i'm with the milford. manufacturers don't just use plastic jacks to save money. aside from isolating ground from the chassis, they also affect how the devices can be manufactured using pcb mounted components. most people though see plastic jacks and assume they suck. yes cheap ones suck, but most often, it's how they are implemented in a design. as dodge mentioned, they need to built in such a way that there is mechanical strain relief to keep them from coming away from the circuit board they are mounted to. plastic jacks = not always bad, poorly designed implementation of pcb components = always bad
3. i can't say it enough, i LOVE johnny demarco. i'm gonna start a fan club. that guy CRACK'S ME UP! not only does the mullet just KILL me, but the dude is a true hessier in the most severe sense. he makes me wanna pull tubes and practice the phrygian mode...

Even if Johnny DEmarco was playing an offset his guitar should still be set on fire whilst he plays it.
As far as the mullet I am jealous. I wish I had enough hair left to grow one.
He is funny and I do like him although he is probably the cheesiest demo guy I have ever seen.

The bad news is, if your leg gets caught up in a lead that's in those jacks on stage, it's not the equipment that breaks, it's youburker wrote:oh man.... My first bass was a crappy import headless bass, and the only good thing about it was that it had one of those jacks.... they lock so the cord never will fall out (or am I thinking of something else?)TheMilford wrote: "If the noise floor is such a problem why are the most expensive amps equipped with only metal jacks?"
two reasons:
strength and because tube "gurus" think the "old way" is the "only way"
if I designed an expensive amp I would use these:

Hi Just wanted to say robert smith used a real early Roland JC-160 not a 120 the 160 is a 4x10. Early ones have no brightness switch and the circuitry is also a whole lot different on the early 160's and 120's.. basically the early 160 sounds a whole lot different to the 120.

A lot tighter, defined and drier sound with a lot more spread...not as bright..it sounds more like a stack than a combo..less boxy..the distortion is awful though as the 120..as a clean amp though I'd rate it second to none..A really great amp imho..definitely one of the best transistor amps ever made.TheMilford wrote: NERD!

To tweak an old famous phrase (about admittedly loftier topics, I should add)...
A guitarist who insists on having one amplifier for spectacular clean and distortion sounds deserves neither.

I dunno... a good AC30 comes awfully darn close to meeting both those needs. For me anyway.
