I bought a Silverface Twin today!!! UPDATE: Review

Post by RumorsOFsurF » Wed Apr 11, 2007 9:05 pm

Thanks everyone for your help in this post!!
index.php?topic=3447.0

I bought my Twin today!  The seller thought it was a '73, but it had no master vol...After some research, I believe it's a '71 .
All but one of the transformers are coded the late weeks of 1970, except for one, dated week 1 of '71.

I am unsure of the speaker type, though.  There are tags on them that read:

005379
465-107
12T6-10
Obviously, they have the Fender stickers on the magnets that read "Fender Special Design"
Does the 465-107 mean they are Oxford  built the 7th week 1971?

Nice score - great tone.  Call me if your looking for a recommendation of a chiropractor. :D

nice amp! Looks like it's been very well taken care of.

those are definitely Oxford speakers, whether or not they were made in the 7th week of 1971 I can't say. Have you looked at the tubes yet? What's in there?

The power tubes are from ARS and are printed with:
6L6WGB/5881
Red Base

I haven't looked at any of the other tubes, yet.

I just read this at www.vacuumtubes.con

"5881/6L6WGB
This tube was first developed by TungSol for the US Military.  They are in short stubby glass envelopes.  There is no difference between the 6L6WGB or the 5881, they are the same tube.  The 5881 has a maximum plate rating of 360 volts at 23 watts and a maximum screen rating of 270 volts at 3 watts.  DO NOT USE IN AMPS CALLING FOR 6L6GC's.  They will likely melt down and damage your amp."

Will these really damage my amp?
On the sticker inside, my amp says it calls for 6L6GC's...Should I be worried?

Seventh week of '71 or '81 or '61,  but more likely '71 based on the style and the amp they came in.  Sweet amp, by the way.

Rumors of Surf.  Why not be safe and put in 6l6cg's? You can always use the ones in there now later if you find out they are OK. I would contact Fender and ask them.
Just replace them and put the old ones away for now, and find out from someone who knows. You may even want to contact Antique Radio Suppy in Tempe Arizona and ask them. They sell sovtek and groove tubes I think. The Groove tubes are good and come in matched sets.
Does your twin have an "output tubes matching" control on the back panel?
I have an 81 twin and it has this.
The Twin has got to be the most reliable beautiful sounding amp I ever played.
Mine came with electovoice speakers (it was an optional upgrade in 81).  They are very clean speakers. You may like the ones in your amp better - more colour to the sound.

When i had a SFTR i was pretty sure about getting EV speakers, cause those silverfaces kind of OD sooner than I like.
I prefer their older stuff.

They most certainly are. They give twins a bad name. Goodbye clean headroom.

Rumors of Surf's twin is a non-master volume.

Or maybe an audiologist! Those things are loud!

Looks like a good score. Hope it works out well.

I've said it before but it seems some people just don't quite get it; it you put the mastervolume on 10 and don't pull it (when that's an option) it's just as clean as any other Twin.

That's not always quite the case for all amps though, in my experience, which is odd.
