J Mascis about his new Signature Model
I just read a small intervieuw with Jay Mascis in a Belgian TV/Music magazine called Humo. Only a small intervieuw, just one mag page.
The interviewer saw his new JM and asked him some questions about it.
This is what he had to say about it;
"Next to Mascis sits a brand new purple Fender Jazzmaster"
HUMO: Did you wen't shopping?
Jay Mascis " No free delivery. This is the Fender 'Jay Mascis' Jazzmaster. I now got my own model. This example is only meanth for fotoshoots, it's not yet availble in the stores.
HUMO: What's the difference between a regular Jazzmaster?
Jay Mascis "Larger frets, a different bridge and a pickguard that was only made in 1958 and '59. Great guitar
HUMO: Are you gonna play it?
Jay Mascis "I might" (laughs) But certainly not the whole time. I rather play older gear. This guitar....It's playable. If I wanna play with a regular Jazzmaster live, I first have to tweak it. This one I can just grab from the rack.
HUMO: In the studio you use other guitars?
Jay Mascis "Yep"
HUMO: When do you decide which guitar you need?
Jay Mascis "My basic guitar for the new album was a Telecaster, Which I also used live a lot from '93 till '98. For "overdubs" I used a whole lot of different guitars.
Well, this is what Mascis had to say about the new signature Jazzmaster....

Sweet! great find. Thanks.
Do you think it will be a Tune-o-matic bridge.

Wow!! He loves it so much! If it means that much to him, I'm gonna run right out and buy one! Yeah baby! Right away... Right now... Yeah... Right now... Jeesh... Show a little a little enthusiasm :-\ Fender must me thrilled with his spokesmanism.
May God bless the Banjo Players... They try so hard...

I idolized J for a long time, but it doesn't sound like a guitar I'd like.
It's not about the gear! It's about you, your hands, your imagination, your feelings.

Re: J Mascis about his new Signature Model
His apparent lack of "enthusiasm" could also be due to the fact that the interview in question was probably translated from English to French/Flemmish, edited for print, and then (I'm assuming) translated back to English by the OP.

Eh? Me no understand? 'Apparent lack of enthusiasm'? This is J Masics we're talking about here!
Not usually known for his bravado! Lovely man that he is.

Re: J Mascis about his new Signature Model
I was going to comment that that sounds like enthusiasm from him! I've seen a couple of interviews, and he doesn't exude energy in that format.
I'm still interested in checking that one out.

I would want to play one before I bought it.

I saw Dinosaur Jr. (awesome show!) and I briefly asked about the guitar. It'll be Japanese and will run about $700. I thought it would be a limited Custom Shop deal, but apparently not.
