Third attempt - lots of white and some black to tone it down a bit, 50/50 with clear lacquer, and I emptied my pot of .002 flake into the mix - happy now:

That shade has come out really nice & lost some of that "Apple" green from it. That will look really good which some clear coats, great work. :)

Wow, you really nailed that colour. Parchment would look brilliant on that.

Hmm...yeah it would

It's pissing it down with rain right now, but I managed to sneak on another coat of the metallic and the first dustings of clear before it started. It wasn't shining enough as it was, so I took the pot of left-over lacquer and poured away all but the last inch, leaving all the metal flake that had settled in the bottom. I mixed this with about twice as much clear and dusted on another two or three coats.

I didn't bother re-doing the headstock - it's not quite as metallic as the body now but it's fine. Neck has now had 2 wet coats of clear.

Really great colour!
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

I made myself a handy fret end dressing file: cut down a medium flat file with my angle grinder and smoothed all the edges and corners, then shaped a lump of alder offcut so it can do either 90 or 35 degree filing. I was ripped off on ebay with a shitty version of this that came with the roughest file I've ever seen and would bend the fret ends before cutting them. This one works really well.

This is brilliant! I've made myself a (much uglier, 35 degree-only) version of this, but I never thought of the dual-angle function. This is such an awesome thread, typical of this whole forum. Respecting tradition, but with lateral thinking and creativity. Can't believe I've only just discovered it, seriously inspiring/motivating. I have a trem/bridge just like yours waiting for a guitar to assemble itself around it, so I'm really enjoying watching this project come together!

Looking good Ben, cannot tell the exact shade youv'e reached cos of cameras etc. I guess it will have the modded green back drop? I like both of them to be honest but the "darker" green with a lot of flake is going to look good! Master of flake, this stuff is not easy to spray. Like to see how this turns out as I think a sparkly solid colour has got to be way more interesting. (Still going for white blonde on mine tho' cos I'm an old git) :) Still like that edge file by the way, nice solution.

Heh. Perhaps that should be our motto/tagline/slogan/other synonym.

There's no trace of the earlier greener green - I sanded that down until it was just flake, really, then there were a couple of coats of the greyer opaque, then some mixed 50/50 with clear, then the more transparent and more metallic topcoats. As I'm dusting on the clear now it's gradually building up over the flake to leave a smoother finish. Should be able to do wetter clear coats tomorrow. I actually find metallics nicer to spray than flat colours - they're much more forgiving of small dust etc because of the busier surface. And no chance of runs when you build it up like that. I spray from about a foot away and build up coats in lots of layers so the surface goes lovely and fuzzy before the clear eats all that up and levels it.

Thats turned out very nice, almost a pearl or blonde shade to it? I do like the scollop contour youve put round this & the rim :)
