^I agree with this. It's kind of like being against animals being killed for meat and then eating meat.
edit: I do feel that guitars being parted out is wrong but I also believe that if you believe in something enough you should make a stand against it and not support it. The fact I could possibly buy a lefty neck from a parted guitar outweighs my concerns about a guitar being parted out.

Re: "PROJECT '65" Update! Pics!
I don't think it is as clear cut as complaining about parting out guitars while at the sametime buying the spare parts.
What I think most people here object to is the few mercenaries on ebay who take a fully playable JM/Jag (or any other guitar) and for no other reason than to make ma squillion $$$ part out the instrument.
We have seen many vintage guitars (including recently a bass VI) that could have easily been restored to its former glory.
If however the guitar is way beyond repare or has had so many routes and parts replaced with no genuine / no vintage parts then we ( I ) see this less of a crime.
Many of these guitars that I see parted out have nothing more wrong with them than wiring fucked up and half a dozen bad refins over the top of each other. The people who are parting them out have purchased them purely for that purpose and have no desire spending hours and hours restoring them.

i blame leo fender... the parts that people are gutting these guitars to get to are the same ones he used in strats and teles. those two guitars are the reason dealers look at a preCBS jaguar and see only the neck plate and tuners... they can almost make more on just those two items than for the guitar as a whole if its in rough enough shape...
that's what he gets for using universal parts...

You do make a good point. I hate the idea of parting out a perfectly good vintage (or even new guitar!!) instrument. Whether it be for profit, or any reason. Buying the parts isn't the same thing. It probably is a little hypocritical...grammar??? ...but if you need the parts, what are you going to do?

I think what I'm getting at is that if you're happy to buy the parts you're just supporting what these people are doing and have no place to complain.
There is a reason they are parting them out and that's because people are buying.

Re: "PROJECT '65" Update! Pics!
or maybe it's the other way around; people are buying because they are being parted out, in some cases i'd even say it's a matter of rescuing the parts from going on strats or teles. the bottom line is that the amount of complete vintage offsets is decreasing with all the parting out since some parts go on other guitars. so if a jazzmaster neck gets put on a partsmaster instead of a partscaster i'd say that's a small victory. retaining the status quo, so to speak.Amber wrote: I think what I'm getting at is that if you're happy to buy the parts you're just supporting what these people are doing and have no place to complain.

True, I guess it's just an awkward situation. It's a shame Fender can't do anything about it.

yeah it's just a vicious circle. in 30 years, who knows if there will be any vintage fenders left intact...

Re: "PROJECT '65" Update! Pics!
By buying the parts I am SAVING another guitar. The other guy's going to sell them anyway.Unless the entire planet gets together on this and boycotts the parts... I'll keep buying them. FWIW, I won't pay stupid money for them. I have to live with the steady increases, but will not hasten the spike uneccessarily.
And by the way... I haven't been one to rail about people parting them out. I only make an occasional comment when it seems to be a perfectly good guitar with no issues that is scrapped. I've parted out a few myself....
And can we please limit this thread to PROJECT '65 specifically?

Here, here... how about some picks of the guitar with the D&B neck on it?
One more guitar, then I'll practice!

Re: "PROJECT '65" Update! Pics!
Pics should be coming soon. I haven't done much with it over the past week, but last night I did finally drill the pilot holes and mount the neck. It looks pretty good. I still need to mount the bushings and tuners, and shape/install the nut. But my daughters coming home for a visit tonight through Sunday, so P65 will probably lanquish for a few more days yet.
I've definitely decided NOT to use the '66 B&B neck. It will be going on the bay the moment it gets here...

Doug, I'm looking to do a lefty '65 myself with D+B and Warmoth have told me they can do me a large peghead, Total Vintage neck with binding. You could sand the headstock down.
I'm really hoping they haven't got this wrong as I'm going to be doing this in a few months and the D+B pictures topic has really set me off. Someone else here sanded a headstock down with good results.
There's something about the binding and '65 decal that I love. It really sets off the rosewood fretboard as well and adds more contrast to a Jazzmaster!

ILSF cut down a large CBS headstock for his Jazzblaster, and it looked great. I think he traced the JM head over it and cut it with a jigsaw or something. That would be alot of sanding if you choose to do it that way.
Let me know what kind of price they give you on it. But actually I'm pretty happy with the Allparts neck until I can score a real one. And I'm in no hurry...
