Now here's a rare set of pics...

Post by Fall reverb » Mon Jun 04, 2007 2:31 pm

I'm not sure if there are (m)any Beatles-fans on this forum, but The Beatles are my favourite band ever, and here are 2 terrrific & ultra-rare pics of Lennon & McCartney that have very recently surfaced - they're very probably the coolest pics I've seen since a very long time, as I'm pretty stunned to see John Lennon playing a Jazzmaster here...

Some background-info about these pics : these photos were apparently taken in Hamburg on June 26th 1966 after The Beatles' 2 performances at the Ernst Merck-Halle that day, and in the 'Beatles Anthology'-book Paul McCartney states the following :
[while in Hamburg] we had an old booking that had to be honoured. It was strange to see all our old friends in Hamburg. It was as if we'd mutated into something different and yet we were still just the boys. But we knew and they knew we'd got famous in the meantime and that we shouldn't really be playing that sort of gig.

It was good though. I remember it being a crazy evening, very steamy. There was a lot of crying from our German gangster friends, nostalgia for the old days. I'm not sure how good a gig it was from a musical point of view, but it was quite nice to get back one last time
.

I'm pretty sure that most folks here probably won't see the importance of these pics, but I'm personally really excited to see Lennon playing a Jazzmaster here, as this is - I can assure you - the only photographed occasion where Lennon or any other Beatle can be seen playing a Jazzmaster...

Great photo. They look so young, and pretty smashed. Mr Lennon looks great.

I hated the Beatles for years thanks to my Mum playing them when I was younger (she's seen them 4 or 5 times). I love them now though. Well, everything from Rubber Soul & onwards. Not so keen on the earlier stuff.

Wonderful! That makes me happy to see atleast one of them playing a jazzmaster. They've played VIs and Jazz basses, why not Jazzmasters?

Your next mission Fall Reverb, should you choose to accept it, is to find out just what is written at the top of the body, under his arm.

I can't find the picture but, does anyone remember that black and whit picture of that guy being given a white jazzmaster with his signature in a similar place? Could be the same guitar, just borrowed...

I liked the pickguard. I'm guessing it's just the picture but it looks almost black, sort of like a black anodized guard although it's not, because you can sort of make out some swirlyness of the tort.

Great pics, I agree they look young and healthy and drunk. Best way to be.

Yeah everywhere you go there's people that hate the Beatles for this or that reason. Nothing wrong with that, we all like differnt things.

I love them to death however and I don't need to go into why I do. It's boring and unimportant. I love The Beatles and always will.

being an absolute beatle freak... gotta say  ... wow !!!

Great photos...   but they do look youing for a 1966 period photo ... do we have confirmation that it is infact 1966 ?

talking about the beatles using fender equipment, there is a great moment in one of the GET BACK Sessions outtakes I have on bootleg DVD where Lennon says the only amp any one should ever get is a  Fender Twin Reverb...

also I am pretty sure the lap steel slide solo on FOR YOU BLUE is Lennon playing a Fender Lap steel (which Fender gave them at the same time as the Bass VI)

I was no big fan of the Beetles myself and grew up in their era, being 61 and all, but I always liked Lennon's and Harrison's guitar work.
I was a Hendrix fan then and still am, in fact  I listen to him every day and have for the last 38 years.
I did like the Beetles though, but not nearly as much as Hendrix.

Likely to be a borrowed guitar, as I've never seen another pic of a Beatle with a Jazzmaster. George and John both owned sonic blue strats, George's one being eventually painted dayglo psychedelic.

Cool to see, anyway.

It's definitely not the same. The other one is a 1958 gold guard... It's here:

I'd guess it's a borrowed guitar, but wow!  Happiness is a warm Jazzmaster...
