Mine is embarassing. When I was 12 I was a huge fan of the band Live. In their video for the song Lakini's Juice the guitar player had this big fuzz tone and was playing a '62 surf green jazzmaster. I fell in love after that.

John Frusciante in the Red Hot Chili Peppers' video for "Under The Bridge":
I would love a Jag like that. Maybe one day I'll splurge and have an MJT one made.
Anyone know what colour it is? It looks a bit like Sherwood Green to me, but it's hard to tell... maybe it's more blue?
My first Offset purchase was on a whim while I was on holiday in Quebec. I bought a CP Jag in CAR, then spent the night playing RHCP songs in the corner like a weirdo in the hostel I was staying in.
I ended up sleeping with the Jag next to me on my bunk as there were a few shifty lookin' chaps in my room.
I hate shared accomodation... it sucks.

It wasn't so much a certain player as it was stumbling across this on Elderly one day:
I guess for influential players though, Andrew Kenny from AmAnSet. I knew I needed something that would sound like his guitar tone on "Magnificent Seventies", and it turns out he plays a JM.

I can't remember which one it was exactly that started it, I always thought they were cool. Frusciante's Jaguar always caught my eye.
I remember seeing this image though and going out and buying my Fender Mustang, which I wish I never got rid of. It was my favourite guitar. I bought an olympic white one with tort, because the quality and size of the picture I had wasn't very good and the Sonic blue just looked whitey/cream.

This was the first guitar I ever wanted.
My tastes changed, not really into Les Pauls now. I found out about offsets...
Then I saw Kurt playing Mustangs, they've been my favourite guitar ever since.

Wasn't a band or guitarist for me. I was at a guitar show in Seattle in 2008 and saw a beautiful vintage Jazzmaster, I believe in Fiesta Red. Hadn't really paid those guitars any attention before, but seeing that one in person planted the seed for me. When I happened across this Jazzmaster at a Guitar Center a couple months later, I bought it on the spot. Been an offset fan since, though I play Mustangs now and no longer have this Jazzy.

James Shaw of Metric and Broken Social Scene. He mainly plays modded Jaguars, including this yellowed one with Jazzmaster pickups. Seeing Metric play live was the first time I really took notice of an offset, and shortly after I bought my first.

Oh shit, that was yours? That was a huge style influence on my partsmaster. Made me decide to go with a black guard over gold.

oh god, this going to sound so sad. i always remeber seeing the band "feeder" playing jags and jazzys. when i was 14 i was also a HUGE offspring fan and nearly brought a ndm-1. didnt because i hated the pups in it. i also used to go to alot of local gigs and there was a band from ek called "the wisconsin moose chain" or somthing like that and they were using jagstangs and mustangs. i kinda associated offsets with.... diffrent kinds of music. i also think i may have seen one on a live clip of the band yourcodenameis:milo but dont hold me to that.
offset guitars resident bass player.

Re: Post pics of the guitar that started it for you
As far as offsets go, I remember being in to the Radioheads when I first started playing and knowing that Thom played a Jazzmaster. My friend had also had just gotten a mij Jazzmaster and sold me his Tele Deluxe (also a Radiohead guitar), and I've been in to teles ever since.
Before that when I was just messing around on an acoustic I had, I was really in to getting a Danelectro, probably something to do with Beck and their price point.
But when I first saw live videos of the Pixies, the telecaster and goldtop les paul (like somebody else already mentioned) being played really got in to my head. I didn't really understand all of the variables in the guitar tone equation, but I thought a lot about that combination making the sounds I heard on the records and it's kind of been the standard in my head. Timeless band playing timeless guitars with perfect rhythm/lead interaction...
