I scored an HH VS Musician 100 watts Guitar Head

Post by k o y l » Sun Oct 14, 2007 4:52 pm

I wasn't looking to buy an HH amp but It was on sale on french eBay, it was still cheap 2 minutes before the end time of auction and since most HH amp found on eBay UK are "pick up only" sales, I couldn't help but bid and I won !  :)

To tell the truth I have no need of an amp now since I only play solo with my laptop but it may change sooner that I thought: I've been contacted by an experimental accordeon player living in my area on myspace and we'll probably met this week .

The head is second hand, purchased in 79 by the seller. It's in perfect working condition and very good cosmetic condition as well.

I don't know much about this amp so any infos will be appreciated.  :)

...Especially infos about the "Mixer Output". What I'd like to know about it is:
- Can I use it without plugging the head into a cab ? Is it safe for the amp or not ?
- Does it have some sort of Speaker emulator into it  ?

I have no cab to use with it for now and I guess I won't be able to buy one before quite a long time but still, advices about what kind of cabs would be good to use with it (the head has 2 outputs: 4 and 16 Ohms) would be nice.
I know nothing about cabs, speakers... total noob.. and I see it as a complicated choice so I better start to gather infos about all this now.

I'd rather have a small cab (2 speakers) but it seems 2 speakers cabs are often 8 Ohms...  :(

Oh I almost forgot !  ::)  Here is a pic:

hey welcome to the HH club!  8)

regarding using it with no cab, no I wouldn't do that to the amp, it would wreck it   :o

regarding the hadphone output, I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think there is one.

if this is anything like my HH, this should be really loud and AMAZING sounding through a 4x12...of course, it'll sound great through a 2x12 as well...but I wouldn't put it through anything smaller speaker-wise

it should say in the back what ohm cab you should get...mine's at my rehearsal studio, so I can't check right now...I think mine has two 4 ohm outputs, but I've been running it through a Marshall 4x12, which I think is 8ohms or so and had no problems, and I've ran it flat out a few times at a club where the PA was crap...that was quite an experience!  8)

as a side note...I re-read your post, and I see you're refering to the mixer output....

it is possible I guess that you could use it without a cab...

why not contact the guys at MAJ?

they know all about these amps

Thanks !  :)

I don't know if it's a headphone output but there is an output labelled "Mixer Output" (it could be a mono output).

Image

A potential buyer asked the seller about wath impedance it is, the seller answered 4 and 15 (odd!) Ohms...

Aah this will be very frustrating to not be able to try it !  :(

... But I came to think that I have an uncle that has all the tools necessary for woodworking and can make pretty amazing things (furnitures ..). It may be a good idea to ask him to make me a custom cab.
I'll have to check first to be sure it would be cheaper or equal (with more or better features) than buying one.

Anyone know a good amp & cab parts supplier in Europe ?

Edit: Our posts have crossed..  thanks for the link

it's quite possible it might work with a mixer then...but you should really hear it through a 4x12...at least once :)

regarding the 15 ohm output...some British amps are 15 ohm...maybe that's why this is...

regardless though, this is a great amp, you've done well :)

how much did it cost, if you don't mind me asking?

If I ask my Uncle to make the cab, I'll probably go for a 2 2x12" cab or a 2x12" + 2x15" configuration.  This way I'll have a huge sound when I can and want to carry the 2 cabs and I still will have a more portable solution.

I paid 154 Euros (£107) + 20 Euros (£14) for shipping ... I guess it's quite a bargain... :) (Maj is selling one for £175)

Yeah I don't think I would have been able to find one cheaper considering the England to France shipping costs.

actually, if it's Solid State it's fine to switch it on without connecting it to anything (although why you'd want to do that is beyond me). It's only valve amps that get damaged when you don't have a load connected.

Ok thanks.  :)
I want to do that because, first I'd like to try it before I can get a cab (to check out if it works well basically) and, if it's not sounding too bad like this, I could you use it plugged in my laptop and play wwithout waking up the neighbours.

The more I think of the features of thiw amp, the more I'm happy I bought it.
This mixer output will be very convenient, even when I'll use a cab. I'll be able to use this output to go in the laptop for live sampling purpose and I'll have the cab sound for the direct guitar parts... Ths cab and direct out sound will probably be very different but that's a good thing, it will help to make the difference between guitar loops and direct guitar playing.
