Re: Best speaker for DRRI ?
Crex is a good speaker for getting headroom and low end from a small/relatively low watt amp (which the DR is, more or less) but, if you've got a 30-50w amp or 100w amp and you want something that's lighter in weight and will "give up the goods [hot valve sound]" at a lower volume level then I reckon you want to go for something like a Jensen P12q instead. Of course, lightweight inefficient alnico driver is one end of the spectrum, heavy and highly efficient ceramic drivers are the other end and there is a huge spectrum in the middle for you to choose from.

My Deluxe Reverb isn't a Reissue but I put a Weber California with a paper dome in it. It is very efficient and sounds great. Plus it takes pedals well. The Weber California with the cool aluminum dome peeking through the grill cloth has a reputation for being a little shrill.

The Jensen neo tornado classic 100 (I think they spilt a dictionary on that name) is a really nice speaker. Lightweight and suuuuuper fendery.

+1If you have not had the amp a long time, let the speaker break in for a while before making a change. They can really loosen up some.
I had a new Jensen (P10R I think, sold the amp a long time ago) in a Fender silverface. The previous owner had just changed it before selling the amp to me. I hated it at first, as I found it sounded quite harsh in the treble and a bit farty in the low register. But after a few months, the sound had changed quite a bit, and since then I've gone for Jensen alnico in all my Fender amps, unless the original speaker still worked.

I’ve got a pair of Eminence Red White and Blues in my SF Twin, they’re definitely really really really clean. That said, a 120W 101db sensitivity speaker in a 22W amp might be the definition of overkill.
I’ve also heard great things about the Weber California, which is on my list to try when I can get a deal on some.

I'll second the Warehouse G12C/S — I've got a Headstrong Lil King Reverb (which is a Princeton with a 12, yeah?) with one and it's pretty much a perfect combo to my ears... some of the spikiness that can come from those amps is rounded out by the speaker. YMMV but when I heard it I was like damn... where has this been?

I could just be getting more tolerant with age, but... I think the C12K that comes stock nowadays is a damn fine speaker.
I like it considerably more than some of the options mentioned in this thread, even.
It's certainly MILES beyond the old "gold label Fender" eminence that used to come in the DRRI 20 years ago.

I have one of the wine red/wheat ones, which came with a P12Q. It broke up too early for my tastes, so I replaced it with a C12N, but I did have an Alnico Gold in it for a while. I ended up going back to the C12N, which seems to have the best balance of volume and tone.

Re: Best speaker for DRRI ?
wait, they are really shipping the DRRI with a C12K ... a 100 watt speaker? What's the benefit of a 100 watt speaker in a 22 Watt amp? I would totally understand if they'd add the 50 watt C12N but please explain what the value add of a 100 watt speaker in a 22 watt amp can be? Maybe I am stupid bit I don't quite get it. thanks!!øøøøøøø wrote: ↑Sat Oct 06, 2018 1:43 pmI could just be getting more tolerant with age, but... I can't speak for them, but it's got plenty of headroom and you'll never break it!PJazzmaster wrote: ↑Sun Oct 07, 2018 4:43 pmwait, they are really shipping the DRRI with a C12K ... a 100 watt speaker? I don't have a DR but a PR clone w/ 12-inch - it came with a Warehouse G12C/S. Nice enough but I thought it was kind of boomy, I swapped in an Eminence GA-SC64. Tightened up the lows and there's a little more high end sparkle without being harsh.

Recommendations are all over the place, and I stress myself out looking for the perfect replacement to try.
