Unfortunately I just went to check what the valves actually are and it appears I've been misleading you: I could've sworn they were 5881s but they are in fact NOS Phillips 7581s.

Damn, sorry you gave such a thoughtful answer based on my misinformation. Hopefully it'll be helpful to someone else sometime .. I was considering a set of 5881s before I got the 7581s; now I've heard your thoughts on the matter I probably wouldn't bother with them in the future.
