Squier 2020 line

I normally play .13s on all my guitars. so every single guitar in every shop I go in goes out of tune (sharp) when i play it. after using them for 20 years my brain just tells my fingers to press down way to hard when I play.

I got a pack of 13 chromes ready to go for this thing. when you put these on a guitar with any strat trem you need extra springs so i got a bunch of those down in the parts bin to go.

im not worried about it at all.

i remember my old 90's duo sonic I had to tune the guitar to F to keep it in tune. it sucked at first, but I ended up writing so many songs on it in new key it turned out really useful to my songwriting tool box.

the Toronado is one of those guitars Ive never tracked down. by the time I had a steady job to get one the GT models were on the market which looked ridiculous to me compared to the old mexican ones with the big pickguard. this version scratches that itch for me. really excited.

I'm sure someone at Fender/Squier probably got Emily and 60 Cycle guy those guitars. They pay those marketing people for a reason! Especially now that Emily and 60 Cycle guy can't go to Summer NAMM and do their marketing for them.

Hah, I wish! Ryan and I both heard that Fender was shipping immediately and we figured buying them ourselves would be worth getting the jump on doing the early demo. I did have a coupon, though Ryan didn't. Plus, my husband has been wanting a tele, and my singer was really interested in the Super-Sonic.

I do hope that I get a few more in trade to demo -- that's generally been the plan but COVID-19 has affected production schedules for pretty much everyone, so I think it might be a minute.

Our back and forth on instagram turned out to be super beneficial to convincing me to cancel my preorder with musicians friend and go direct with Fender. I left messages with both companies at the same time yesterday and Fender was the only one to call me back. it made the decision to switch a no brainer. Fender Rep says the guitars will be in the mail for me on monday!

One thing to note about the Super-Sonic, for those who consider buying body/neck separately in order to build a partcaster... If you don't watch the 60 Cycle Hum videos (or know about the original model, which was the same IIRC*): the neck heel is unusually shaped. It looks like a Strat heel, but the neck actually extends below the pickguard and in fact looks closely (if not exactly) like a Tele heel. Add that the neck plate is not the usual one, too... So if you like the Super-Sonic, playing mix-and-match isn't much of an option, get the whole thing and mod what you like instead.

The Toronado was pretty close to the original thing. Definitely not the same quality on the neck (super glossy, not a fan of Indian laurel) and this one had some bizarre wiring issues. All of the pots worked counterclockwise opposed to the standard clockwise. The neck pickup only had a weak signal when volume was set to about the middle. And the control knobs controlled the opposite pickups from an original Toronado. On my '98 the the top row of knobs control V/T to the bridge and the bottom set control V/T on the neck. This was flipped. Very strange! Leads me to believe this one was wired incorrectly.

Weird, I've had two of the '98 Toronados and they've both had the pots working opposite to yours. Mine have both been:



(and when in the middle position, the bridge pots are disengaged so the neck pots control everything.)

Sounds like maybe the Squier has the standard wiring (save for the counterclockwise pots) and your '98 is wired backwards?

Boom! I consider myself corrected. I sold Fender for a loong time so I guess my cynicism bubbled to the top. Good work jumping on those guitars for all of us to see/hear. And thanks for in-person appearance. Always a winning hand around here.

Yes, the neck heel shape is unique to Super-Sonics and was found on the original Vista series and later Fender Pawn Shop reissues as well. It's a consequence of the neck pocket being shortened to allow easier access to the upper frets.

I think I will cancel my SuperSonic pre-order after seeing these early reviews, I don't really want a guitar that needs a lot of work to be playable.

The rubber bands that came on the Bullet Mustang were atrocious, no guitar should be judged on factory strings, least of all a Squier.

Those are the Fender branded strings made by D'Addario. The colors are Fender custom colors, Sonic Blue, Surf green etc, to denote which string is which.

.009s on a 24" scale is a baaaaaaaad idea.

As a general rule of thumb, you should probably use 2 gauges above what you would prefer on a 25.5" guitar on this scale length.

As a general rule of thumb, you should probably use 2 gauges above what you would prefer on a 25.5" guitar on this scale length.

*24" scale with vibratos, yes. Hardtail shortscale models are totally fine with lighter strings.

Personally, I usually get away with one gauge between scales. I use 10s and 11s respectively.
With a hardtail Mustang or Duo, I like 10s.
