Re: NEW Squier Offsets 2017
on a random physics note, i wonder how the strength & springiness of the printed bridge plate compares to the traditional heat & bend type? & maybe it doesn't even matter in this context.
i remember in metalwork at school we were taught how the platelets or whatever (ok i may have been looing out of the window when he gave us the jargon! the fibres or strands or whatever) always stay aligned (like lasagna layers) but stretch on the outside of a bend to make the structural qualities of a heat bent & tempered piece of metal different from a bent shape cut out of a block. tempered ones supposed to be stronger, i think.
but if this was built up or cut out & then bent that would fix the issue.
does 3d printing metal build up bit by bit or take away?
is there a physics teacher or a blacksmith in the house?

I don't really know. It's much more solid than I was expecting though.

So heres an update on my Mustang. Loving the GFS bridge and GFS gold foils, but I'm really tempted to just take one of the pickups out of the circuit. Can't decide if I'd rather have it neck only (like a music master) or bridge only (like a bronco). I think for the music I play the bridge only would be better, but I have always thought Musicmasters were so neat.

Re: NEW Squier Offsets 2017

It's home now!

Who thougt it was a good idea to put 9s on this guitar? I'll be changing them to D'Addario Pure Nickel 11s this weekend, as I do in most of my guitars.
I'll maybe change the input jack and the pots. Any idea of which pots should I put on it? Would it make a difference? I've never done that, but just wanna try stuff as it's a cheap guitar.

a bump because i am a pest. & because i got a set of vernier calipers this weekend to do pro measuring because i am on a mission to find necks that work for me. 95% i hate.vale wrote:can anyone with one of the new affinity jazzmasters & a calliper thing (or precise-ish measuring device) tell me the thickness (depth front to back) of the neck at the first & twelth frets? & 7th as a halfway house would be a boner. apex of fingerboard (not top of fret) to apex of back of neck.
i'm wondering how it compares with other things i have.
& also if it based on the affinity strat neck, or the fender jazzmaster neck?
thankq kind measurer who can.
thankq if anyone gets the urge.

The output jack is definitely a good idea to replace. That thing won't last.carloshacecosas wrote:I'll maybe change the input jack and the pots. Any idea of which pots should I put on it? Would it make a difference? I've never done that, but just wanna try stuff as it's a cheap guitar.
The pots are of good quality. In mine, there were 250k Alpha-branded dime-sized pots, same thing you'd find on your average Japanese Fender, and better than the no-names you find in some MIM Fenders. On my Bullet Mustang, the plate could handle larger pot bushings just fine with no drilling. Anyway, Bourns is my choice for pots. I like to be able to do swells, both on the tone knob and on the volume knob, so I prefer low-friction, especially on a guitar like Mustang where I don't hit knobs by accident.
Tonally, there will be a difference if you change pots, but not because the stock pots are bad. It's that they're 250k, which does muffle their high end a little bit. I think most would suggest going to 500k with humbuckers, so if you go that way, you'll definitely notice a difference. I generally prefer a linear pot for volume and audio for tone. People argue endlessly on this, but I prefer it that way because I like the way they swell when I go from 0 and I like being able to tune the upper range over a wide sweep.
So, with personal preferences in mind, I would use Bourns PDB241-GTR01-504B0 for volume knob, Bourns PDB241-GTR01-504A2 for tone knob. These are larger pots but would work with your stock coarse split shaft knobs. They turn very easily. Once again, it's a personal preference thing. I like to use them a lot, I don't like the knobs to have too much friction (that's what she said).
If you are one of those that want to use a solid shaft pots with a proper Mustang/Jaguar/Jazz set screw knob, then you're going to need solid shaft pots, but it's like weirdly hard to find linear taper 500k pots with solid shaft. So you might just have to go with both audio pots in that case. Which isn't a huge deal. PDB241-GTR02-504A2 is the part number for a solid shaft 500k pot. Buy them from Mouser or Digikey or some place like that, so you don't pay the guitarist tax that you would at a music store.
Speaking of guitarist tax, though, Fender branded 500k CTS pots are perfectly fine, as long as you don't mind paying $9 for a pot. Nice part about Fender pots is they come with a 0.022 uF capacitor included, which is exactly what you would need for your guitar. But you could also just buy a 0.022 uF capacitor at Mouser/Digikey, too, so like...
Bourns 500k Audio Solid Shaft Pot (or use split shaft, like I detailed above)
Switchcraft Jack
Orange Drop 0.022uF
3/8" Lock Nuts
3/8" Hex Nuts
And if you want to replace the switch, too:
3-way Switch
Black Knob
Hex Nut
Flat Washer

In the black it is a JB. In the white it is a Super Distortion in the bridge and a Santa Anna in the neck. The white has white plastic pickup covers you can get from Allparts.rank wrote:What kind of pickups are those?

So frustrating. I would love the black bullet Mustang, for £100 it seems like a no-brainer, but I NEED a trem. Even a strat style one, anything. All these cool cheap guitars are hardtails and it bums me out. I don't have another £350 for a second VM offset tbh.

get a used jagmaster. can get them in short & long scales. £150 or less in uk, probs even less across the pond.daria wrote:So frustrating. will be better made than the modern budget offsets & hold its value (or even increase). the vistas only ones that might be more than the affity jazzmaster (£180+).
they are great squier offsets & extremely modestly priced for what they are.

Where are you getting these prices from? Every jagmaster on ebay or reverb is £400+

i'm in the uk so not sure where you are for ebay, but if you do a 'completed item' search you will get the prices people are paying here. varies between £100-£200. the vistas (£250ish?) seem to be more sought after but the price difference is greater than the actual quality difference. probably better to buy standard & upgrade.daria wrote:Where are you getting these prices from? nice fully-loaded candy jagmaster body went for £64 this week.

nice couple here:

& if you can hang on for something local (collection only):

opportunists & cynics can put wildy ambitious prices in their listings but they don't generally sell for that. well maybe to mugs (don't be one).
asking price & selling price different things.
