jazzmaster mod

Post by sunfolk » Sun May 18, 2008 9:55 am

hey ya'll.

im new to this forum, so go easy on me :D

i've got a Fender CIJ Jazzmaster that kinda bores me by now.. the pickups are waaay too trebly and the hardware is too unstable.

so i was thinking about modding the shit out of it.

i was thinking of changing:

pickups - p90s or similar
bridge - im thinking warmoth's custom Mustang-bridge
vibrato - not sure about this, but i've lost the original tremolo-bar for the jazzmaster, wich means i cannot use it properly. i can't use a allparts-one and i can't find another fender-bar that fits. so i thought about a bigsby?

colours could be chanded, but i dunno. its vintage white right now and i kinda like it that way.

also, when i have the money for it, i was thinking of giving it a firebird-style neck and headstock!

what do you think? any ups n downs?

any suggestions on what parts to use? etc. etc.

Kinda sounds like you're looking for a whole new guitar here. Pickups, neck, head, bridge, tailpiece, possibly the color? Might wanna just shop 'til you find something that meets your specs.

possibly

i really like the feel and the shape of the jazzmaster but i just can't stand the sound and the hardware, since i've gone from Fender amps n Fender guitars to Laney amps n Gibson guitars

another thought:

most of the sound of a jazzmaster is ofcourse in the wood & the pickups.

i know nothing of pots, but i've heard that by changing the volume pot you would get a less trebly more smooth sound. anyone?

just switch to the rythm-circuit. that would be the same effect as turning the tone-knob halfway down.

The one on the right in this linkshould do the trick.

I'd say a lot of the sound has to do with the bridge/vibrato construction as well. The body wood is the same as most strats, and the pick-ups aren't THAT far from a strat's either.

Yes, the pot thing could be an option. I have stock pots in my '64 and 250 kOhm (strat value) pots in my '69. The '69 is a bit mellower (though of course that also has to do with the rest of the guitar). It's a fairly cheap thing to try, compared to the other things you're suggesting :).

Hi Doc,

What cap do you use with the 250K pots? A regular 0.47pFu?
(I'm doing a Tele with MIJ Jag pu's in it, hence the question)

thanks,

Good question. I think I just transplanted the one that was in there ;D. That one wasn't original, so I don't really know....
