Behringer LM Drum

Post by JSett » Wed Jan 29, 2025 8:13 am

So, I've made no secret about my regard for Prince circa-78 through to about 1992 and of course the Linn Drum is famously featured heavily. Not wanting to fork out +3k and not having the space for an original, my interest was piqued when I saw this release. I'm bad with synth stuff in general but I'm even worse programming drums on a computer, so knobs and sliders are better suited. I wouldn't normally buy from Behringer as I despise their business practices but, legitimately, Linn no longer makes a LM1/2/etc and there's no alternative from another company, so I compromised.

From what I can gather, it seems they're likely losing money on this due to the cost and build style etc so it's clearly a vanity project for Uli :D

It arrived about a week and a half ago and I've spent maybe 10 hours playing with it so far:

The UI is a little clunky, but according to the bass player in the band (who's very informed on synth stuff), it's actually quite straight-forward once you get familiar with them (I am not). That being said, I am learning how to mix and match drum sounds, twist things a little to get more interesting noises out and generally make the most of it. We have a rehearsal tonight and we're doing something special that needs a drum machine funnily enough so I've dug out an old Alesis Microverb III so we can feed the snare out to a gated reverb - the unit has individual outs for each instrument which is super handy. It has about 6 drum kits on there but room for shitloads more and promises of updates for a while (plus people building sample packs). I might try and find a few snares with the gated reverb already on there so I forgo the Microverb and use it somewhere else if desired.

Anyway, here's a little something I did, along with my Jaguar and an appropriate signal chain. It's a bit ropey, but was written in about 20 minutes so take it as it is.
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

Wow I dig that riff. Reminds me of something early 80’s goth in a good way.

I have an old Oberheim DX. I’ve loaded it up with a hybrid kit of EPROMs but it’s made up mostly of the Linn LM-1 stuff aka the Prince drum machine complete with detuned rimshot. Fwiw the DX has instrument tuning accessible on the back panel which is handy.

Does the Behringer let you load original EPROMs?

I had no idea these existed! (looks like they don’t yet I’m in the US)
Totally enjoyed the test as well (and all the sounds therein)

Oh, 80s goth was exactly what I was going for, so thank you! :D yesh, there's room for 128 user samples (so, totally plenty) which I am going to dig into next week. It just had an update apparently which I'll do today/tomorrow as it brings in some missing functionality (IE: being able to tune every drum, whereas at the moment it's missing on a few banks for some reason). Also, I haven't looked at the software yet so I need to familiarise myself with it.

Yeah, they're fresh out this January, I expect the boat with the first US drop is on its way. And thanks for the kind words about the demo thing :)
