I just can't get rid of the ringing on my JM

Post by Bodah » Sun Jan 28, 2007 8:07 pm

I've tried just about all the advice I've read.  I've taped the posts, had a buzzstop, adjusted the action.  And now I just gave up and got a mustang bridge (so no more buzzstop or taped posts) but it didn't help.  Sorry if I didn't search thoroughly enough, but I don't know what else to do.

buzzing or ringing ?

if it is ringing  ... many here have paid good money to get a gtr that actually does that....

I suspect it is a function of the JM trem design
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

If you mean the ringing overtones coming from behind the bridge... you can stick a small piece of foam rubber under the strings back there so that it is firmly wedged between them and the body of the guitar. As an alternative, you can wrap a piece of tape all the way around the strings back there, going in one big loop that covers them all. That is my favorite attribute of these guitars, but that's just me  :)

WOW.  The tape did it.  Thank God I got the buzz stop for free and that the Mustang bridge helped with the action.

I did like the way it sounded sometimes, but muting reeeeeally bugged me.

And what's the point if you can't hear it through the amp?

I think it probably affects how the other length of the string vibrates somehow... like when you strum the strings behind the bridge, you can hear stuff picked up. I like it anyway.
Times change.  Remember when dog Jimmy used to go white and chalky?  Now it grows hair!  We got used to it. We'll get used to poly. -blueavenger

you can hear it through the amp, though!

it's definitely one of my favourite things about the guitar - it's kinda like a weird reverb :D

That's the 3-D sound I love about JM's that you're hearing!

Let it ring!

Or don't...  :)

+1 to that Chris, it's one of the coolest features of the Jaguar and Jazzmaster bridge and trem system.

I like it with chords, but is it supposed to ring so heavily when you mute strings?

do you use really light strings with your guitar, by the way?

I played a friend's JM that was strung with 9s, and it made annoying sounds....we switched to 11s and the problem was solved....

I'm using .10's, but I'm getting it set up tomorrow, should I ask them to put .11's on it?

I don't know.  How big of a move up is it from .10's to .11's?  I mean I could just get used to them anyways.

Would they give me a thicker tone? 'Cause I think that'd be cool.

JM's can use very heavy gauge strings and still play well.  I usually use .11's on a tele and they feel much lighter and flexible on a JM for some reason.  If you're having issues with buzzing, etc. then sometimes switching to a heavier gauge string on a JM or Jag will help out.

.10's on a JM still sound good to me but are a bit thin and really "loose."

But, it's all about what sounds good and plays well for you.  You could just try the .11's and see what you think.  Most .11 gauge sets aren't much bigger than the standard .10 sets anyway.

11s will feel like 10s on a JM.
