Epiphone Sheraton II or Casino???

Post by mewithoutus » Mon May 21, 2007 12:37 am

I know what you all are thinking:

"Jesus, this kid goes through gear like Pete Townsend went through Rics!!"

yeah, im picky, sue me 8)

anyway, ive wanted a sheraton II for some time now but never followed through because i figured i didnt need it. well, i realize i dont need the tele deluxe. im not that much into it after all, and i love my mim standard and 69 reissue. they get more playing time. so, the deluxe is out.

now, i know the guitar i get will be natural, but i cant decide on the sheraton II or casino!!!

any casino or sheraton owners care to speak up and help me out?

I used to own a Casino, one of the original Japanese models from the early 80s. It's the only guitar I used to own that I really miss. I'd love to own another...

...and I used to own a Sheraton (II), an older one that still had "by Gibson" inlaid in fake abalone in the headstock, otherwise it was the same as in your picture. A natural one with gold hardware. MIK. What can I say, it was a very nice guitar but I could never get used to the humbuckers. I think a Casino has P90s, right? That would have my preference. But anyway, workmanship and all were very good on that guitar, even though it was a s big as a house and heavy as sin.

i would replace the pickups with some sort of bucker sized p90. or with GFS vintage split buckers.

anyway, i think the sheraton meets my needs better so im leaning towards that. too bad my shop isnt an epiphone dealer  >:(

any other owners wanna speak up and give their two cents???

thanks for the feedback guys.

okay. i have a Sheraton II that i really like, now that i've upgraded it some. the stock tuners and pickups were complete garbage, so i replaced those. (the new PU's are Seymore Duncan, a Jazz at the neck and a 57 at the bridge.) i also replaced the bridge and tailpiece, but that was a formality because i'm not a big fan of gold hardware.

that said, the build quality of the instrument itself -- neck, body, binding, etc. -- i think is really great. it's a cool guitar. and plays wonderfully for my little jazz excursions and Galaxie 500 meltdowns.

The Seymour Duncan Phat Cat is an AWESOME HB-sized p90. Really, really good.

You're selling a guitar with humbuckers for a reason, you know? Get the Casino!

I would say Casino all the way!!!  Total Beatles Rooftop vibe!  8)  Then, get a Rosewood Tele, and you're set!!  I like the Sheratons, but the P90's in the Casino can't be beat.

Hell man, I'd buy em both! You fellas make a good argument for both!  ;) Coming here sure doesn't help me save money.

Yeah, but you're a Fender dealer.  How about a TC-90 Thinline?  They play a lot like a Gibson/Epiphone.

I saw a really nice TC90 on craigslist for 300 a few months back.  I should have bought it.  They are goofy looking, but I still like them

Oh, well in that case get the Sheraton or the Casino. ;)

Aside from pickup differences you also need to consider semi-hollow (Sheraton) or full-hollow (Casino).  The Casino also has a trapeze tailpiece which is going to give a little different character to the sound.  They're both excellent choices, and I think the Sheraton would be great with Phat Cats or P-94s.

Good luck with the decision!

The Sheraton is a really nice guitar. I personally wouldn't go for another single coil guitar if you have a lot because I own quite a few and I love the sound contrasted against them.
