Tummy Cut Dimensions

Post by bdf83 » Mon Sep 01, 2014 12:25 pm

This might be a stupid question but I can't the dimensions and exact positions anywhere (and I HAVE looked) so could anyone with 5 minutes and some callipers tell me the dimensions of the tummy cut on their Jazzmaster?

Depth relative to body thickness/Width towards the centre of the guitar/overall length of the contour/ relative position from the upper horn. Any of these would be helpful.

Its not on any diagrams I've seen and have been wondering how you go about getting it right. Surely it can't just be "keep going until it feels right"?

I've got a couple of offcuts and have tried a couple of different methods before Im going to do it on the one-piece body I've got but need the dimensions first. Ive gone through the "marking it out, sawing notches in and chiselling" technique but I'm worried I'd saw too deep and have a nightmare trying to sand it out. The last one I did with a rasp and a spoke shave and then sanded it smooth(ish) which I think is going to give me the best results but everything I'm learning is from on here and youtube tutorials.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

According to this image it seems to be about 20.5mm deep, 264.9mm long. It's either that or 29.5mm deep, it's hard to make out. It starts 3" from the horn.

Is it the same for a Jaguar? I tried searching that site for a similar image.

I believe the Fender Custom Shop uses one's actual tummy as a template.

I've just done something similar to an unfinished JM body (wish I had those drawings :fp: ). I used an angle grinder with a sanding disk. If you use a reasonably fine grade disk you can do it nice and gently. It does the curve quite well, but practice first on an off cut is probably a good idea. ::)

its cool, its more for a guide than anything else. I took the routing depths from another thread in here from a '62 so it should be reliable enough for what I need.
