Refinished Sea Foam Green Johnny Marr Jaguar

Post by SwedishJames » Sun Jul 10, 2016 4:23 am

Hello all, first post alert

For many many years I've wanted a sea foam green or lake placid blue Jaguar. Unable to find a nice one, I decided to make one. I picked up a b-stock Johnny Marr Jag with very minor paint defects and with this, created my dream Jag...

I used to lurk on this forum quite a bit when I was trying to decide which Jag to go for, and it was a really helpful resource! It was refinished over a year ago now, but I thought it was worth sharing - I always struggled to find good pictures of sea foam green Jaguars.

The colour has a tiny bit more blue in it than typical sea foam green as I had a very particular shade in mind. Here she is:

The colour is difficult to capture in photos, but this is the best idea of the actual shade.

As originally bought:

With the rest of the family:

I'm not really much of a Jag player nor a Johnny Marr fan, however, the Jaguar has always been one of my favourite looking guitars, so it really was an itch that I had to scratch!

I'd say you scratched it! Looks great and welcome to the forum.

Infusing some blue is a big improvement IMO (Sea-Foam for the red/green colorblind). Very tasteful.

Looks great. Did you strip it or just sand and overspray?

Also what type of music do you play? Vintage style fenders and superstrats seem like opposite ends of the spectrum.

Thanks for the kind words!

I always found that whilst I loved the idea of sea foam green, most of the guitars I found (usually Japanese ones) looked a bit 'cheap' and too green. Also, there seems to be lots of people labelling surf green as sea foam green. These pastel shades do seem to be incredibly variable so I just modified the colour to what I wanted it to be in my head. I think the shape of the Jag suits the more pastel shades - it's all very '60s.

I know it's a love / hate colour, but I do think that this one turned out right. For me it's the right balance of blue / green, and it's intense without being gaudy (I'm not a fan of washed out colours)

I actually based the colour on the ex Mark Bolan one that is fairly well documented on the web

It was a proper job - taken back to undercoat and finished in nitro. It's a much nicer finish than the factory finish

It was all done by a very well respected British luthier... He did a fantastic job and helped me achieve the exact colour I wanted. He actually does work on JMs own guitars so it's got a nice bit of heritage. I'm glad with what I ended up with - a US made Jag, in sea foam green, with bareknuckle pickups. It certainly beats all the (massively) overpriced vintage and Japanese ones that I was looking at!

Completely get what you are saying about my guitars being the opposite ends of the spectrum! Music-wise I'm into all sorts. I grew up with blues, rock and funk, then moved into the heavier side of things, and ultimately more jazzy and progressive stuff. I'm a pretty eclectic player and I like having a range of guitars that all offer different things. The Jag isn't the most versatile thing in the world, but it does what it does well, and aesthetically, I just think they are beautiful looking things.

The colour really does look like a perfect early 60s Seafoam Green. It always reminds me of the Bass VI in Spinal Tap.

I have a Japanese Jazzmaster in their 2002 version of Seafoam and as much as I love it, the colour definitely lacks that blue hue that makes Seafoam so vibrant.

Congrats on a great guitar!

As much as I like the Marr Jags in all their natural forms, that is lovely. It'll turn heads everywhere you go.

Thanks, It was about £400, so given what I paid for the guitar, my overall spend is still a lot less than the RRP of a brand new JM Jag and less than many AVRIs that float around on eBay.

Colour was based on this:
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mJIHyVCxqt0

In the right light, it is pretty much identical

After looking around on this forum I'm thinking it needs a parchment/cream/mint pickguard now...
