NAD Marshall JCM 900 Dual Reverb
I know these have a bad reputation with some, but there are a few musicians who use these that I like the sound of so I wanted to give it a try. Since it was around $500 it didn't seem like such a biggie to give it a go. My impressions so far is that this is a really bright amp. I normally put my treble almost at full on all my other amps. On this one I backed it almost to the middle point. I have bass at full and I have mids a little past half. This amp almost favors middle position or neck pickup because of the treble, but with the treble backed off quite a bit, the bridge pickup sounds fine. I am running it through my GK cabinet that has G12-70. I might try it with a different cabinet to see if it can shave off the bright a little. (Yeah I know there is hate for the G12-70's also... LOL) I really like that each channel has its own reverb control so you could have reverb on your clean but not on your dirty if you wanted or the other way around. The effects loop works well as far as I can tell. It takes my Muff style fuzz and overdrive well in the front end. I am using my Orange footswitch currently to switch channels but the button on the front works well. It is a BIG head. (Wide) It is wider than my 4x12 cabinet by an inch or so on each side. I kinda wish the pots didn't turn so easily but that is a personal preference. I like the sound of the dirty channel with preamp maxed. At any rate, here are pictures of it.

Nice, these are under appreciated. They are definitely bright. And I remember when I was young and stupid enough to look down on them because they dared to use solid state in one of the gain stages on the dirty channel.
That was back when I was obsessed with tube pedals. I hadn't quite figured out that most of the best dirty tones I admired were partly or entirely coming from solid state pedals. The 900 just kind of internalized what everyone was doing anyway.

That is kind of what I think too. People that hate it seem to hate it because of the clipping diodes mainly... but plug analog pedals for overdrive, distortion, and etc into their tube amps....

I tried it with my Supersonic 2x12 cabinet and didn't care for it. I like it better with the GK cabinet. Here is a sound demo. (It might still be processing. Just started uploading a little bit ago.)

Those amps are rad. I had an SLX model about 15 years ago and dearly miss it. I'd hit that for $500 any day of the week.

Re: NAD Marshall JCM 900 Dual Reverb
I have the exact same amp but the person I bought it from had modded it by jumping the clipping section and replacing the channel 2 transformer with one from a jcm 800.
When I ran it through a Marshall cab it was too bright, but through a line 6 4x12 it sounds awesome. I run mine with the bass at 4 mids at 7 treble at 5.
It's crazy how high the reissue is priced when you can get the originals for so cheap!

I think it is funny how low these sell for over clipping diodes....

Re: NAD Marshall JCM 900 Dual Reverb
My main band amp for ages was an 87 JCM 800, one of the models with 9 knobs, and had the clipping diodes. With the gain below 4 o’clock it sounded just like any other JCM 800.
Good score, if I ever needed the volume and that much amp gain again a JCM 900 would be on my short list.

Re: NAD Marshall JCM 900 Dual Reverb
Way back in the late 90's, I had friends with dual reverb half stacks. They both set them clean and used distortion pedals. Years later, while recording a demo, my other guitarist used the studio's 900. Again we set it clean and used pedals. We must not have been able to get the tone or gain we wanted.
I've had many Marshalls, never had a 900. I had a 2205 800, DSL 100, TSL 60 and 6100lm. I read the SLX and 2100/2500 are considered better than the 4100/4500.

Re: NAD Marshall JCM 900 Dual Reverb
Happy belated NAD! That's a really nice sounding amp. I'm not sure why anyone would hate it aside from what you mentioned about the misguided notion of not wanting anything solid state in the gain stage. Lately, I've been listening to Catherine Wheel a lot and marveling at the richness of their Marshall tones. Your video did nothing to help curb the GAS I'm developing for a Marshall half stack. Seriously though, it looks like you found a keeper.HNB wrote: ↑Wed Feb 20, 2019 6:23 pmI tried it with my Supersonic 2x12 cabinet and didn't care for it. I like it better with the GK cabinet.
