Re: Brand New Squier Paranormal 2023
Only concern is the WRHB being too boomy, like with the WRHB on that one mustang they put out. I've heard running the pickup in parallel has helped and I'm wondering if that could be a future solution for the rascal if that's an issue for it. Maybe it's just not the right bass for me and I should go with the Squier mustang? That's enough from me, have a good weekend guys.

Any news on these? Can’t seem to find anything which is odd since even after leaks they are usually announced a week or two later!

I like the laurel neck on my squier vi quite a lot. It wasn't nearly as janky as I had expected it to be.

Re: Brand New Squier Paranormal 2023
I'm fairly convinced at this point that the problem most people have with Indian laurel is really that most people see these guitars at Guitar Center or Sam Ash where instrument care is the absolute last optional thing on their task list, so everybody's experience is dried out, ratty, weird-feeling fretboards that are desperately begging for some oil. Sure, some of it is a bit on the greyer end of the spectrum, but there's some really nice grain on some pieces.
I may also be in the minority that I'm not excited at all by dark pieces of rosewood that are fairly uniform looking.

I’ve always had the view that necks are either maple or dark. But then again I’ve never used flats & have no idea how to setup a guitar properly. And I’m left handed.
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

I was extremely surprised by the quality of the laurel board i got because everyone I know was hating on them for so long I just assumed, I was wrong and also the finish on the back of it (tint etc) is fantastic. I am not afraid to buy a laurel board.GilmourD wrote: ↑Fri May 12, 2023 9:29 amI'm fairly convinced at this point that the problem most people have with Indian laurel is really that most people see these guitars at Guitar Center or Sam Ash where instrument care is the absolute last optional thing on their task list, so everybody's experience is dried out, ratty, weird-feeling fretboards that are desperately begging for some oil. Same! Oddly enough it's my daughter's Squier Mini Strat that changed my mind on laurel once I had it oiled up and the frets polished the first time.panoramic wrote: ↑Fri May 12, 2023 9:40 amI was extremely surprised by the quality of the laurel board i got because everyone I know was hating on them for so long I just assumed, I was wrong and also the finish on the back of it (tint etc) is fantastic. It’s not a visual thing I hate about laurel, it’s the feel, the overly grainy texture…..
Some of them look really nice, but I find them uncomfortable in hand..

Nothing a little bit of fretboard oil and maybe some 0000 steel wool can't fix. I haven't ever experienced grainy texture that wasn't due to the fretboard being really thirsty for oil and haven't even had to use any abrasives to fix it.sugarandopium wrote: ↑Sat May 13, 2023 3:58 pmIt’s not a visual thing I hate about laurel, it’s the feel, the overly grainy texture…..

I bought one of the CV “late 50s” white blonde JMs because I loved everything else about it, thought I could live with the laurel.
The neck came with the scratchiest roughest frets I’ve experienced in 35 years of playing, so it got a lot of steel wool. Conditioned it several times with fret doctor as well..
It’s just a wood with excessive grains, conditioner or wool isn’t going to change that.
The frets improved after a ridiculous amount of work but the laurel is still heavily grained.
I made a blaster out of it, it has an old mim jm neck on it now.
On the other side of the coin, I’ve played some of the recent epi LPs with laurel and it’s much nicer wood, still a ton of grain in it, but much tighter than the CV laurel.
Some people can deal with laurel. Others like myself can not. It’s 100% the composition of the species, some of the colors the trees produce I think look very nice.
It’s just not for me….
I have grown to really like pau ferro because of the tight grains. I love ebony. Laurel is just the opposite of my ideal fretboard wood.
I’m hoping the JMxii uses something close to what epiphone is souring these days, since it wont be coming from the indo factory.
Worst comes to worst if I like everything else about it, im okay with sourcing a warmoth or musikraft neck for it.

Re: Brand New Squier Paranormal 2023
I will say that I also have a cv vi and it’s much more comfortable with the blocks and binding, the bass strings probably help too. I actually don’t even mind playing that one…
I bought it new and couldn’t believe how dark is was, even bone dry day one out of the box it was surprisingly dark, improved a bit more with oil, it looks really really great.
We’ll see what happens with these, I’m really looking forward to the Xii, laurel and all.
