tele deluxe knobs / find fakes only here

Post by Jay » Mon Oct 29, 2007 6:41 pm

I'm not 100% sure but these are without question silkscreened amp knobs.  All the real Telecaster Deluxes I've seen had the flat insert and a different font.  Examples below...

The direction the numbers are facing are different as well. Not sure if that changes anything or anything.

To further confuse things, the 2nd set you posted have different font sizes for VOL and TONE, whereas the set on the Deluxe on the bottom look like both are the same size, and the volume knobs say "VOL." with a period.  I'd say there's much more in common with the 2nd set and the set on the guitar than with the first.

The taper looks funny on the first set too.

EDITED: That changes something, maybe.  Wait a minute, I'm confused.

I notice another difference between the ones on the guitar... there is a dot on the volume.  VOL.  versus jsut VOL

We posted 15 seconds apart!  And I thought I was right on top of this...

As for the amp knobs, I've actually only seen knobs on the tele deluxe with the numbers facing the amp way and not the 60's witch hat way.  If there are tele deluxe knobs with the numbers right way round then they're leftover 60's witch hats that were used on the XII I'd guess.

Amp knobs always have that indentation as far as I know but I've never seen knobs with writing on them on a guitar with the indentation.  That's why I think they're fake.  It wouldn't make sense to manufacture them that way, too hard to screen on a non flat surface.  So they make a flat insert to screen on, an a indented insert for the amp knob, and use the same mold for the plastic portion.

I guess I assumed that all the guitar witch hats had the numbers the other way around from the amp ones, but apparently I've not spent enough time staring at original Tele Deluxes.

Notice also, on the legit set the "number one" has a serif at the bottom Also the "number seven" has a curved leg.

Strangely though this is different to the possible fakes & the ones on the first Tele posted.

That makes me think that the ones on the Tele are from an amp & the legit ones pictured are for a guitar.

Sorry to add to the confusion.

knobs used on tele deluxe and custom...?

Post by mynameisjonas » Wed Oct 31, 2007 4:15 am

this thread got me wondering about this. it seems like the black knobs used on 70s deluxe and custom teles were not all the same. from the examples i posted in the other thread i drew the conclusion that the were 3 4 types:

1. amp knobs with curved/concave top and numbers facing inwards, no VOL or TONE on the top
2. amp knobs with added VOL and TONE
3. witch hats with flat tops and numbers facing outwards
4. witch hats with flat tops and numbers facing inwards
also, some had a period mark after VOL, and some didn't.

it could be that some of the guitars i posted had repro knobs, but you can never be sure of anything when it comes to fender....

so, please dig up any pics you can find of vintage tele deluxes and customs and post pics of the knobs, so we can get to the bottom of this.

'75 Tele Deluxe....

Image Image

As I pointed out on the other thread the 1 and 7 are different on these "legit" ones.... My white ones from Doug have the same numbers (facing the same way too).

Perhaps these are amp knobs, designed a little different....

Image

I wouldn't be that surprised to find them showing up on Vintage guitars, they're virtually the same.
